One potiču maštu, kreativnost i nadasve inovativnost.
Gold medal at INOVA YOUTH 2022 innovation exhibition
For a model prosthetic arm made exclusively of Legos, Katarina and Lara won a gold medal at INOVA YOUTH 2022😊
At the largest exhibition of youth innovations in the Republic of Croatia, INOVA-MLADI 2022, vukovar gymnasium students Katarina Jovakarić and Lara Šijanović, exhibited in the category of Secondary Schools their technologically sustainable solution Lego robotic arm, created as part of the international eTwinning project "The green changemakers". This year, young people showed their creative and innovative side more than in previous years, and 291 exhibits and 476 participants from as many as 41 schools were submitted! The central annual event is extremely popular among young innovators was held on 7 May 2022.
With their performance, knowledge and demonstration, the girls delighted visitors since LEGO cubes and boundless possibilities of their stacking have always been in the field of interest of both children of different ages and adults. They stimulate imagination, creativity and above all innovation. Likewise, numerous studies point to the fact that girls and women opt for STEM careers in much smaller numbers. Although women make up 50% of the world's population, according to the UNESCO Institute of Statistics (UIS), only 28% of scientists are female. Some interests, and later careers, are considered "more suitable" for boys, and some for girls. Encouraging children to engage in certain activities has a major impact on the further development of their skills and interests. Thus, for example, playing with cubes and similar creative toys is a good predictor of later spacial abilities that are important for understanding mathematical and engineering concepts. For all these reasons, Katarina and Lara decided to accept the challenge and show that girls, just like young men, are capable and ready to explore and create creations in the field of sustainable development through STEM activities by creating a model of a prosthetic arm made exclusively of LEGOs.
And if they were successful in that, the proof is the gold medal won!
The ceremony for awarding medals and recognitions was held on 19.5.2022 at the Dubrava-Cultural Center in Zagreb. After an inspiring and fruitful day, with a medal around their necks, the girls returned home happy and proud to have contributed to the overthrow of prejudices and stereotypes that STEM is reserved only for the opposite sex and that they presented robotics through their Lego robotic arm in the form of solutions in the service of sustainable development, and as early as tomorrow they begin a new study of the boundless possibilities of LEGOs, IoT and microcontroller!
