THE CHUBBY LITTLE PEA
The Greek team has translated a popular Greek children's song in English. Then, each member of our team created a drawing for each verse, visualising the image it describes. Finally, we created two big posters which include both the etwinners' colourful drawings and the verses translated. It was an ambitious project about which etwinners werevery enthusiastic and excited. They really enjoyed working on it as it sparked their creativity and imagination.
Just a few words about the song we translated. It is called 'Το Χοντρό Μπιζέλι' tranlated as 'A Chubby Little Pea' and it is a very popular song from ' Edo Lilipoupoli'.'Edo Lilipoupoli' was a radio program that first aired over the radio waves of the national broadcaster's (ERA) Trito Programma between 1976 and 1980 when the great Greek composer Manos Hadjidakis ran it.It was very popular and young people all over Greece would tune into the Trito Programma to listen to the yarns of Edo Lillipoupoli which got its name from Gulliver's Travels Lilliputians.
'Edo Lilipoupoli' came to life by a group of creative young people who believed that children had the ability to understand the grown-up world and participate actively in it.Marianina Kriezi wrote words of colours and Lena Platonos, Nikos Kypourgos and Dimitris Maragopoulos gave those colours a voice. Every morning, Savina Yannatou, Marielli Sfakianaki, Spyros Sakkas and Antonis Kontogeorgiou would sing of the feats of the Lilipoua.
Hadjidakis described it as “the conception of free and experimental radio… and a group of young people with lots of talent who got together on the 3rd [programme] and worked with high spirit, dignity and self-respect”. That’s probably why Lilipoupoli made history.
THE CHUBBY LITTLE PEA
The chubby little pea is dancing with much glee
is dancing with much glee at the peas’ grand ball.
And the little zucchini are cheering and applauding
are cheering on the greenery and on the lawn.
With my new green bow-tie on
I am heading for the peas’ grand ball.
It is high time that I, it is high time that I
danced with passion and delight
with an artichoke held tight
my first tango.
Amaranth and spinach are dancing sirtaki
are dancing sirtaki at the peas’ grand ball.
And an enormous okra is dancing pentozali
is dancing on the greenery and on the lawn.
With my new green bow-tie on
I am heading for the peas’ grand ball.
It is high time that I, it is high time that I
danced with passion and delight
with an artichoke held tight
my first tango.
