The I.E.S. "San Juan del Castillo" is a public secondary school in the province of Cuenca (Castilla-la Mancha) located in the town of Belmonte with a population of 2000 inhabitants. It is in rural surroundings, 160 km away from the city of Madrid and about 100 km from the cities of Cuenca and Albacete.

It is a small center where there are 24 teachers and a total of 168 students. They are between from 12 to 18 years old. In recent years the total number has been decreasing.

The town has a great artistic and architectural heritage, with well-preserved medieval monuments. I would like to highlight its medieval castle, one of the best preserved of Spain, the Colegiata (main church of the town) or the Palace of the Infante Don Juan Manuel restored a few years ago and converted into a hotel-spa.

Taking into account the total number of students, there are 120 of them studying compulsory secondary education, otherwise known as ESO and 48 studying higher secondary education school (Bachillerato) in the modalities of Sciences and Humanities and Social Sciences. Of these students, in compulsory secondary education there are 13 students with special educational needs as well as 15 immigrants. These do not produce a special need on the part of the school, being totally integrated, although they are attended with the specific supports necessary in each case. We do not have refugee students.

As a special feature, it is important to point out that girls from families with problems who stay in the orphan school come to this secondary school. In spite of their particular problems, in general they are properly integrated in the school.

In general, the socioeconomic level of the families is medium-low, being mostly dedicated to agriculture or the services sector. Families support the education of their children as a means of improving future possibilities.

The majority of students at the end of compulsory secondary education continue to study in Bachillerato as a non-compulsory stage as a means to access university studies. As a disadvantage, students must go to other towns in order to carry out professional training courses of medium or higher grade, because we do not offer vocational training in our secondary school. In the same way university students must go to the cities in order to study a degree.

This secondary school has taken part in autonomic projects of the promotion of healthy habits through the practice of extra physical activity and promoting the balanced diet for several years. He has also participated in projects to promote the reading and use of the library of the school.

Several years ago we also participated in an international environmental project called GLOBE.

In relation to foreign languages, in the last year we are doing our best to improve the linguistic competence of students with agreements of collaboration with academies and Cambridge examiner center. Likewise during this school year part of the teaching staff has been registered on the platform Etwinning to study the development of an own project or participate in any that is already underway.

According to this line of work, some students of this secondary school participate in school sports championships outside of school hours, as well as attending English classes in the afternoon at the Cambridge exam preparation center.
