FINLAND. Ritaharju School

  • Oulu, Finland

Ritaharju School a comprehensive public school in Oulu northern Finland. Here are some links to videos about our school: http://www.ouka.fi/oulu/ritaharjun-koulu/koulun-esittely . There are about 1100 students in our school in grades 1-9 (ages 7-16) at the moment. We follow the Finnish curriculum.

Environment of the school is a suburb close to beautiful Finnish forest scenery.

Background (socio-economic) of our students is good. We have class for grades 7-9 students with special needs in learning.

Our students are nice motivated youngsters with good study motivation and normal career prospects- both academic and vocational studies

We are planning (and soon building) a new building (learning invironment) for students in grades 7-9 and our focus is to get a partner school with new ideas, interdisciplinary learning and use of ICT. We are interested in personalized learning and studying in teams.

Ritaharju School is new and strongly developing school. A new curriculum has been taken into use in Finland last year and we are working on the curriculum in Ritaharju. Open learning environment, personalized learning and project based learning are on our focus. Ritaharju School is taking part into Microsoft New Pedagogies for Deep Learning project and a national project called Hundred (https://hundred.org/en). Our challenge is the growth of the area  where the school locates.  The planning of the new upper grades building  has begun and we are searching good practises. We are aiming high – that why we have named our new buulding project “Sirius – the brightest star on the sky”.

There will be about 10 teachers taking actively part into this project. They are all subject teachers: PE, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, Biology and Geography, Special Needs, English, Technical and Textiles teachers who are all committed to this project.
