The fall of ideals

  • "All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others." ("Animal Farm" by G. Orwell) - Can one stay faithful to ideals, resisting temptations of the world?

In my opinion it is extremely difficult to resist the temptations of the world. When trusted with power, most people will feel the urge to use it for their own good, not thinking about the ones surrounding them. It is possible to stay uncorrupted, however, if we have friends who are not afraid of confronting us with the bitter truth. If we have those people in our lives right from the start, we can use the power that is given to us for something great, something big. We should value different opinions, not shut them down, and we mustn't be afraid to reconsider things. Power has to be approached with care.

    The Fall of Ideals

by Irina Berndl, BG-BRG Kufstein/ Asutria

    Autonomy loss

In our century, it isn’t easy to have an individual character. We are like fish, which swim in a group. One does something and every otherone will do the same. This is reflected in our society. If an important person sets a new trend, for example just wearing skirts, a large part of us will do it likewise. In my opinion, we all should try to maintain the same character. No matter how difficult it is. The more independence gets lost, the less we will keep our ideals. What would a world without difference look like? Nobody would form his own opinion or say it aloud. „Be yourself“, these words should always be in our heads and we should also try to implement this.

                                                                                                                              by Sophia Gruber                                                                                  Irina Berndl - 01.12.2018 @ 14:18

I agree with you, Irina, it is really important to have your own opinion and stick to it. We have to be ourselves and must not let anybody influence our decisions. It depends only on us how we will use the opportunity of having power. We can do something in favour of the whole society, like Snowball from ”Animal Farm” wanted to, or use it only for our own good, like Napoleon. Anja suggested that we should have people we trust who can help us make a proper decision in a difficult matter. That would be a proper way to avoid overusing power. It is obvious that no one is perfect. I suppose that a greater part of us has an idol, a role model, a person we would like to imitate because of some reasons. However, we need to remember who we are and think for ourselves, because otherwise we can be easily manipulated, like animals.

I also think it's extremely difficult to resist the temptations of our world because many people are afraid that others will explain them for crazy and so on when they don't follow the majority. But because of this I really admire people who manage to resist. An example are Sophie and Hans Scholl and the White Rose. They were so brave and didn't act like all the others. Unfortunately not many human beings are able to do that because they are too afraid of not being liked anymore or worse.

I just read your article and I found it interesting to read. I definitely have to say that I agree with you when you're saying that you should try to have an independent character, no matter how hard to maintain or to get. In my opinion, talking about this topic, the main problem is that poeple either try to be popular or they are afraid of being not liked, or in extreme cases "left over". So to say in society it needs people who are not very interested in what the others think about the person, therefore I'd like to add a nice saying:

Be a voice, not an echo!

    Hello!

This article refers to a important part of our society. All human-beeings are an individual but the problem about it is that humans are a gregarious being, and many people lose their individualism in a 'group'. The easiest way to explain it is that there are stronger characters, which are followed by weaker people and this forms a consistent society with no individualism. People want to be like the majority because it gives them a feeling of affiliation. But you have to remind yourself that you are the one to live your life, and you should never lose you individuality or values for anyone.
