Fractions outside
6th grade students had their math lesson and our plan was to recall to them basic things about fractions, butthe sun was shining and their motivation was not perfect for learning inside. So we agreed that we would create some own exercises and work outside with them. We decided to use Seppo- game based learning tool. First we divided the students to five groups. We looked from the math book what we should learn and decided that the five topics should be:
1. Converting fractions
2. Reducing the fractions
3. Adding fractions
4. Subtracting the fractors
5. Rewriting mixed numbers to fractions
Every group went outside with their Chromebooks and thought what kind of exercises they could create. They took some notes and created their own exercise to the "Seppo".
After all the groups were ready, they could start doing the exercises other groups had greated. Here are some examples..
Demonstrating fractions by sunglasses:
3/2-1/2 = 2/2
Rewriting mixed numbers together:
6/4 = 1 2/4
Explaining adding fractions (in finnish):
Some calculations with grass (subtracting the fractions)
Overall we had great experience and students were even better in creating the exercises that I would have thought.
