    Topic: Physics Funny Experiments

    Class level: 11 – 12 year-olds

    Short description (impact on students): Students learn to orient themselves on a map or use Google Maps to discover where each group finds the materials they use in their experiments. The students recognized and correctly used the measuring instruments in solving the tasks in the experiments. The activity took place in the school yard. Students used phone applications - calculator, compass, google maps.

    Time: 50 minutes

    Learning objectives:

    • developing students' curiosity for the study of physics by carrying out funny experiments;
    • the formation of practical skills - the recognition and correct use of measuring tools (carpentry, tailor's tape measure, roulette, scale, stopwatch, compass, graduated vessels) to perform various measurements;
    • training and/or development of orientation skills on the map and in the field; recognition of cardinal points;
    • development of collaborative and cooperative relationships within the group;
    • learning specific physics terms – length, mass, volume, time/duration, area/surface.

    Process:

    The students are grouped into 5 groups by counting (for example) or as they wish.

    - Each group receives a map/plan of the school and the school yard. Students will recognize the elements in the school plan with those in reality, colour them differently, identify where they are and then draw the route they choose to travel to where the materials were "hidden" for each group.

    - In the marked points they will find various measuring tools that they will bring to the worktable, identify and use in solving some tasks (based on the sheets designed for each group).

    Tasks for each group:

    • How long did it take to identify the place where the materials for your funny experiments were hidden? What did you use?
    • Use the tailor's meter to measure your waist and compare the results with other colleagues.
    • Use the roulette, measure the length and width of the basketball court and calculate its area. Draw its shape.
    • Choose the right scale to weigh the mass of the following objects: apple, backpack, book, your body, a candy. Write down what you measured!
    • What volume of water is in the glass? Graduated vessel - what is it used for?

    - Realize a project about the use of these measuring instruments in other situations of everyday life using digital applications: Pic collage, Story jumper, Book Creator or Power Point.
