    8TH GRADE

    Length: 2 lessons

     

    THE AIM:

    1. Find out about sustainability and recycling;
    2. Learn specific vocabulary related to ecology and sustainability;
    3. Practice speaking skills;
    4. Share experience on recycling;
    5. Create items from recycled material.

     

    IMPACT ON STUDENTS:

    • Learn specific glossary related to the topic;
    • Use different devices for observing and taking photos smartphones, tablets, cameras;
    • Will be able to speak about recycling and sustainability;
    • Become aware of advantages of recycling;
    • Learn to be creative and inventive;
    • Master personal and cognitive skills, booster self- esteem, practice public speaking, pronunciation, articulation.

     

    Before the lessons:

    1. Observe the surroundings: corridors at school, school playground, their homes and neighbourhoods for one week and make notes on litter and recycling, take photos.

    2. Choose one day to take all the rubbish/litter form bins in your class.

     

    Material and gadgets needed: gloves, rubbish bags, scales, glue, paper, frames, boxes, etc. depending on the final product to be created.

     

    LESSON 1

    In class

    Planning

    Introduce the topic and the aims, explain the tasks for the next class

    Warming –up activities: brainstorming (group work)

    Students in groups of 4 in 3 minutes write the words related to ecology, share the pictures of the surroundings, discuss in groups what they noticed.

    1. Watch a documentary about recycling: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OasbYWF4_S8 .

         After the film, play KAHOOT answering the questions related to the documentary.

    2. Read the text about sustainability, green energy and recycling; do vocabulary related tasks: (gap   

         filling with new words, jumbled letters).

    3.  Students check the contents of their rubbish bins and recycle the material.

    4.  Weigh plastic, paper, glass and fill in the chart.

     

    LESSON 2

    Making art from recycled material

    The aim of the lesson:

    • Master the vocabulary on recycling, practice public speaking;
    • Create a Christmas toy from the recycled material;
    • Introduce the toy, material and technique used for making it.

     

     

     

    The process

    The students work in groups. Make the toys.

    Each group introduces their work.

    Decorate the Christmas tree.

    Discuss about recycling and sustainability.
