Topic: Around the Town
Class level: 5th grade (11–12-year-olds)
Short description (impact on students):
Students will practise the prepositions of place and giving directions in English outside, in a real context, with the help of some online tools. They will become better and more confident communicators in real life situations.
Time: 1-2 h
Learning objectives:
- Students are familiarized with the correct use of the prepositions of place;
- Students are able to guide somebody and give directions correctly in a real life situation;
- Students can properly use technology to suit their needs.
Process:
1. Students stand in circle, around a bench, in the park. With the help of a ball which is passed from one another they are asked to move the ball and illustrate a particular preposition of place said by the teacher.
e.g. The ball is next to/ behind/ on the right/ on the left etc of the bench.
2. In pairs or individually students play a Kahoot game to practise the use of the prepositions of place.

3. Students are then given the names of some locations in town. In pairs, one student needs to give directions to another one to get to a certain place in town using the Google Maps app.
e. g. The Copou Park, Museum, St John Church, Town Hall etc.

4. Once the students got to a particular location, they need to take photos, scan the QR code to get more information about the place and make later a PPT about that place/ building. They can present it to the other colleagues in the end.
5. Game: Who is the fastest?
This game can be played individually, in pairs or in groups.
Each student/ one representative of each group/pair extracts 6 letters of the alphabet. They need to look around and, in a given period of time (ex.10 minutes) they need to take photos with objects/plants/people etc around them so that the first letter of the words in English illustrates the letters extracted. Who has the most correct pictures/finishes the fastest is /are the winner(s).
e.g If you extract the letter D you need to take a picture of a door/dragonfly etc to illustrate it.
