The magic flute

  • THE MAGIC FLUTE

This opera was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Its premiere was in Vienna on 30 September 1791. The German libretto was written by Emanuel Schikaneder and its name in the original language is Zauberflöte. The story has traditional fairy tale themes and Masonic elements.

The Magic Flute is set in ancient Egypt. Its story centers around Tamino, a young prince who enters a quest to win the hand of the princess, whose name is Pamina. ... The Queen of the Night tries to destroy Sarastro and lure Tamino and Pamina into her power; she represents irrationality.

The three spirits reassure Pamina that Tamino does indeed love her. Tamino declares he is ready to be tested, and — together with Pamina — faces the trials of water and fire; with the aid of the eponymous magic flute, they are successful.

So, the Queen of the Night is not purely evil as she is sometimes described, nor is she purely good. Unlike many of the other characters, her personality is realistic and multi-faceted. She has both a cold, calculating side and a gentle, caring side.

The Magic Flute has been described as “an Enlightenment allegory, veiled in Masonic ritual.” The story, founded on a fable by Wieland, is based upon circumstances connected with the mysterious worship of Isis, the deity of the ancient Egyptians.

Czech pupils from grade 9 worked on this project during distance learning when schools were locked down due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Here is Kuba´s poster, he is in class 9B. And Adéla from class 9A created another poster about The Magic Flute.

    Adéla wrote about this opera:

The Magic Flute is the last opera written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

He wrote it just three months before his death.

This opera was first performed on September 30, 1791, in Vienna.

The Magic Flute has become famous for many reasons.

Mainly, it’s because of the fairy tale in which Prince Tamino plays the flute to find his way to his beloved Princess Pamina.

This famous opera is played all over the world.

The Magic Flute is translated into many languages.

The first performance in the Czech Republic was on October 25, 1792, and it was in Prague

Štěpán from class 9A wrote his opinion on this opera:

"The ´Magic flute´ is actually a classic fairy tale, where good triumphs over evil, light over darkness. As in many fairy tales must the prince saves a beautiful princess, pass a hard test, and defeat evil. Of course, he has a magic object to help....a flute. Honestly, I don't like opera, but as a fairy tale it is nice."

And here are his project posters:

    Tereza from class 9B wrote:

"This is not very interesting for me, because it´s not my cup of tee. But I think it is a great opera."
