February - Carnival and Masopust

  •  February is the time when people in our countries celebrate that the sun is coming back and they also want to have some fun before the time when they prepare for Easter, an important holiday for Christians. The time before Easter is called Lent, people give up their favourite meals and some really fast. Before Lent starts, In Britain, people use the last flour to make pancakes and in the Czech Republic, people bake donuts. People in many countries make carnival masks and go out into the streets and dance, celebrate, and are happy.

    Croatian pupils from Sanja´s class decided to be people from the past for Fašnik, They were great: Marija Jurić Zagorka - writer, Sljavoljub Penkala - pencil inventor, king Bela IV. and other pupils were people from old Zagreb.

     

    Czech children and teachers made masks for the February Masopust Carnival 2018:

    Class 4. A with their teacher Mrs. Purkyňová had a project Masopust day on 13th February 2018. Pupils learnt about the tradition from books, watched a video, and found pictures painted by Josef Lada. They baked doughnuts and made their masks. Finally, they learnt a Masopust song and rhymes, you can watch a video here. They worked in the Czech language, Art, Crafts, and Music lessons. 

     

    Pupils from elementary level (grades 1 to 4) who attend after school club had Carnival party on 21 February.

     

    Spanish pupils had Carnival project days on 8 - 9 February. They had their Carnival queen who was giving interesting orders to her pupils: to paint a flag of project countries on the face and make a crown with their favourite animal and write its name in project partner language.

          

    Italian pupils decorated their Carnival crowns with sun and rainbows.
