Saint Niklaas day - 6 December

  • project Facebook

In some countries, Saint Niklaas with his helpers (an angel and a devil) brings little gifts to children during the evening and night on 5 December. What was happening in your town?

    MIKULÁŠ

Czech children get little gifts, chocolate, and fruit in the evening on the 5th of December. Those who were naughty usually get some black coal and potatoes too. The St. Nicolas is called Mikuláš in our country. He wears a long white robe, a tall white cap with a golden cross and a big stick. He looks old because his hair and beard are white as snow. He is accompanied by an angel and a devil. He comes in the evening because in our country people used to believe that after sunset a new day starts. So after the sunset of 5th December, it is 6th December which commemorates the St. Nicolas. There are various legends about this saint telling us that he was giving gifts to the poor.

In our school, we have a tradition that the oldest pupils from grade 9 dress up as St.Nicolas, angels and devils, and take gifts bought by our school boards to children in our kindergarten and all pupils in our school. Because we have so many classes, we have two groups. They really love it!
