    The author worth meeting

by: Anna Jányoki and Zsuzsanna Kémenes, DNG Budapest/Hungary

This is a very interesting theme, but for me the choice was completely clear. Joanna Kathleen Rowling, better known as J.K. Rowling, is the writer I would love to meet and spend some time with. She is the creator of the 'Harry Potter' fantasy series, one of the most popular book and film franchises in the history.

She was born on 31st July 1965 in Yale, England. Besides writing, she is also a screenwriter, film producer and researcher. She was employed as a researcher for Amnesty International, when she conceived the idea for the Harry Potter, being on a delayed train in 1990. Her fantasy book series Harry Potter gained worldwide attention and sold over 400 million copies. She also worked as a producer of the Harry Potter movie series. Besides writing for children, she also wrote 4 books for adult readers. Time magazine chose her as a runner-up for the Person of the Year in 2007 and she is now the 197the richest person in the UK. She has an estimated net worth of £600 million. She is the mother of 3 and married to Neil Murray.

If I would meet her, I would ask her about her daily life and interests: what she does, how she speaks with her fans, whether she likes cooking, what she likes to do with her children and husband, what type of dresses she likes most, what type of house she lives in and so on and on. I would also like to find out more about her writing career, is she planning to write more fantasy books for children and what motivates her to write? I’m also really curious, how she feels about being so popular. Finally, I would like to know the books she likes to read and according to her, what special qualities an aspiring writer should have.

Rowling is my childhood hero and I have always wanted to meet her. Her books are quite special to me and helped developing my imagination a lot. Sometimes her books inspired me to a great extent. I would be really happy to meet personally with the creator of Harry Potter and learn more about her. The way she had influenced millions of children all around the world is quite unique. It would be an extraordinary experience to spend some time with this living legend.

    Hello Zsuzsanna,

I loved your article, especially because I can relate to it so well. I would love to meet J.K. Rowling as well! Her work is truly inspiring, like you mentioned, and it would be incredibly interesting to get to know the person behind Harry Potter. For me, the writer I would love to meet is Stephen King. His novel "It" is by far my favourite book, and I am so grateful that King wrote it. But I love his other books as well, "The Shining" for example, or "Finders - Keepers". I would love to ask him how he manages to write so fast - he has written over 50 books! I think that having a conversation with him must be wonderful. Judging from his books, he seems like an intelligent and thoughtful person. He is also an inspiration to me when it comes to my own writing.

    Hi Zsuzsanna,

I think J. K. Rowling is a great choice. But I have to admit that I have not been into her books like every other book nerd. But still like fantasy. I would love to meet Sarah J. Maas. Her writing style is so specific and real...when you read her books you dive in another world, forget everything around you and think you are a part of the storyline.  I love her characters and how she describes her story.

And even though I would love to meet her for just her inspiring talent of writing... I think it would be cool to talk to her. I have watched a lot of interviews and she seems super funny.

    Hi Zsuzsanna,

I also think your choice’s pretty good. Moreover, I would love to talk to J. K. Rowling, too. But I’m afraid I wouldn’t speak so much. I probably would be too nervous to ask her my questions… In terms of questions, I really like yours by the way. I’d love to hear her answers, so if you meet her one day, please tell me; )

A little bit off topic, but I have a strange thing with authors: I absolutely appreciate their performance, but I kind of feel like it would destroy the book’s magic if I meet them. But that’s only the childish part of myself I guess.

There is one author I’d like to know a little bit better, though. Her name is Anna Sewell and I truly admire her. Not only her book “Black Beauty” deeply touched me she also must’ve been a strong woman not being able to walk alone without help after an accident she had at an age of 14. She needed horses to carry her around and therefore her sympathy and understanding for animals grew. In a time, most horses (and other animals) were treated badly, she found a way to change this, by publishing her only book “Black Beauty”. It is kind of a horses’ (mainly know as Black Beauty) biography, telling the reader all the cruel but also kind things he experienced. The book had an incredible impact and indirectly improved a lot for the horses’ situation, but sadly the issues the story is dealing with are still current.

This is why I would love to chat with her and maybe she has some suggestions what we could do to care better for our animals.

    Hi Zsuzsanna,

I am also convinced that you made a wonderful choice with J.K. Rowling. She wrote some wonderful, gripping and fascinating books. With her unbelievable fantasy she inspired nearly the whole world. In addition, I believe many people would love to meet her because she has a lot of fans.

I would like to meet Thomas Brezina. He writes books especially for kids and adolescents. I loved to read "The Knickerbocker Banda" when I was 10. So, he was a part of my childhood. Today I am interested in his huge imagination, because his stories are unbelievable, and everyone is very special. Moreover, I want to know if he has sometimes a prototype for his characters. Furthermore, it would be interesting if the type has some similar features and maybe resemble the fictive protagonists. I would love to ask some more questions for example which of his books he likes most and what his favourite character is.

I totally agree with the statement that J. K. Rowling is one of the greatest authors of our times. She has created an absolutely amazing magical universe that everybody wishes that they lived in. The "Harry Potter" book series was probably one of the most often read novels of my childhood and because of that, I have a huge sentiment for them. It's fair to say that they have largely contributed to my love for literature. Even though nowadays she writes strange and unnecessary things on her tweeter, she is still someone that I admire for the amazing imagination used to write such breathtaking stories.

I know the works of both Stephen King and Sarah J. Maas (mentioned in the comments by Anja and Pia). I feel like some of the novels written by King are excellent, though I didn’t really enjoy Maases stories. I don't think that if I had a chance to meet one author I would choose any of them. Instead of that, I would love to meet Polish writer and the 2018 Nobel Prize winner Olga Tokarczuk. I feel like if I had a chance to meet her I would be probably too intimidated to talk, but I would love to hear her talk about her works because I find them extremely interesting and inspiring.

Hello guys! As all of you (and probably a vast majority of book lovers of the world) I am enchanted by the magic of Harry Potter created by J.K. Rowling. But, as Martyna has written, I also think that she needn't have posted all this weird information on her social media. The author that I dream of meeting is Jane Austen. You may not be familiar with her works, which is a great pity. She is known for writing some of the greatest love- stories of all times such as 'Sense and Sensibility', 'Emma' and my favourite one- 'Pride and Prejudice'. Thanks to her amazing and beautifully written books I really got into 19th century culture, which then resulted in taking up many of Jane Austen- related activities like historical dancing and sewing. They changed my life and I would like to thank her for that. I would also ask her a lot of questions and inform her how significant was her contribution to setting women's expectations so high (because of such gentlemen like Mr Knightley and Mr Darcy). If the meeting really had any chances of happening, I think I wouldn't be able to resist the temptation of giving Jane Austen a Mark Twain's book to read and review, as he is one of the most- known haters of 'Pride and Prejudice'. I highly recommend getting to know her books, even though the original language may be a little hard to read, but it can turn out to be an additional benefit as it would show us how English has evolved since 19th century.
