HKHS November school clean-up

  • On the first Monday and Tuesday of November groups 1bcdG and 1bcdP had an extreme task to  empty all classroom bins and sort the rubbish into plastic, paper, glass and bio waste. We stepped in for the  school cleaning ladies and janitors who do this job on a daily basis.
The Monday and Tuesday groups removed bins from all the 10 classrooms downstairs (including the library) and 10 room upstairs (including the staffroom) and consequently sorted and analysed the waste found in them.
Students worked in pairs - one person wearing gloves placed the litter in the right bin and the other person recorded the "findings" on a worksheet. In the worksheet students were asked to identyfy the piece of rubbish and name it using English, decide what material it was made from, where it came from and whether it had been placed in the proper bin. As a follow-up students' task was to decide whether the piece of rubbish was still reusable or a single-use item.
The outcome was quite predictable - on Monday we ended up with plastic waste tripping of our collective bin - plastic bottles being the main thing , one glass bottle, 1/3 of the collective bin of paper and a dozen smelly banana skins and apple cores which covered the bottom of our bio bin. Tuesday results were identical with two glass bottles instead of one and we could point a finger at  one infamous classrooms where rubbish has not been sorted at all!
Sad and true! We need to figure out if we actually can  reduce the amount of daily plastic by promoting reusable bottles among our students. Also we would like to see our students put more effort into proper sorting.
