Time spent together

  • From Monday June,27  till Friday 31 June, we hosted Erasmus+ project group in Krotoszyn. Students and teachers from Germany, Denmark and Italy arrived to participate in Life in plastic – is it fantastic? project activities and try to find out how we can limit the amount of plastic used on a daily basis.

Thursday 30 June treated us with weather ideal for kayaking though for some the sun proved such a surprise that they forgot to apply a sunscreen. We rowed merrily down the stream or zigzaged - depending on preferences and curiosity to explore the reed clumps on both banksor competitive spirit to push forward. The meal in Ruda Sułowska and the wagon ride to watch birds in the Milickie Lakes offered yet another ocassion for a respite after three days of intellectual challenges.

The last day of the visit was spent at school, writing articles to recap on our activities during the week . We also took advantage of the school barbecue place to have a meal together, talk and dance. We were honoured with a visit from the principal of Martin Butzer Gymnasium, Mr Klaus Winkler, who congratulated us on organising the visit and students' engagement.

Earlier, during the week we had been polling students about bran - a leftover from milling wheat for flour - and how it can be helpful in reducing the amount of waste from plastic disposables. On Friday we revealed the answer and the surprise we had prepared - wheat bran tableware - fully biodegradable and ... edible!

The tableware had been donated to our project by courtsey of the Polish producer - BIOTREM. We tested the tableware and its properties during the barbecue  - some of it even got eaten in the process.  The leftover plates and bowls have been placed in a spot in the open and we have been observing it to witness the composting process.
Saturday was our farewell day. Despite the tears and a bit of sadness we hope our guests left enriched by the expereince of our openness, hospitality and willingness to apply plastic-free alternatives.
