Croatia - The Stari Grad mosaic

  • Our Cypriot partners have prepared a video and presentation about the Paphos mosaics, as well as instructions on how to make mosaics. Our task was to make  mosaics ourselves. Of course, instead of using small pieces of stones, we decided to use paper.

We did some research and found out that we have beautiful figural mosaics within the Church of St John in Stari Grad.  The early Christian Church of St John was built within the Greek insula, converted in Roman times, alongside the eastern gate of the town.

The mosaics probably date from the 6th century. The mosaic that we tried to recreate using the paper is in a shape of a circle with “kantharos“ and 2 birds drinking water in the middle. The artist used very small pieces of stone which shows that he was very skilful and experienced. “Kantharos“ is one of the favourite motifs of the ancient mosiac artists.

Finally, here are some photos of our students with their final product.

In this way, we have tried to encourage  our students' interest to know more about our island heritage and we hope that these activities will  ensure the project sustainability in the future.
