By our musical instruments - fundraising activity we want to support the work of the NGO “Musicians Without Frontiers", with its headquarters in Hamburg. Already in the planning phase of the project our Music department came up with the idea of “recycling” unused or slightly damaged instruments in a meaningful way. During our search for an organization that we could support, we came across “Musiker ohne Grenzen e.V.” (MOG), Musicians Without Frontiers. We invited Christoph Hannsen and Joshua Kaewnetara of MOG to visit us at our school, so that we could get to know each other and learn about each other’s projects. Musicians Without Frontiers has established a global network of creative music projects in order to bring people closer together and to provide them access to music - regardless of their living conditions. The association arranges Musical Voluntary Placements for up to 70 young musicians a year and collects donations (mainly musical instruments) to support their projects in Ecuador, Jamaica, Ghana, and India and also in Hamburg, where the musical work helps to improve the living conditions in disadvantaged neighbourhoods. Music creates joy and self-confidence; it is a medium to express oneself and to learn social skills and it provides alternatives to a criminal career and social marginalization. In order to enable MOG to continue their projects and fill them with life, we have motivated the school community and friends of Gymnasium Altona at various occasions (via our school’s homepage, posters, at public concerts and MOG’s presence on our Open House Day) to make their contributions. Some of our donations are already on their way to projects abroad.
