Stefania Rizzo / Collecting and recycling cork
February-June 2017
After the separate collection was started in our school earlier this year, I came to know that in Spain and in Germany some people recycle also cork. As I found the initiative might be replicated in our city which produces daily great amounts of cork waste, I contacted the President of Amorim Cork Italia, which is the Italian branch of a Portuguese company that produces and supplies cork stoppers worldwide. Since 2010 it has taken care of recycling and reusing corks supporting several nonprofit associations committed to recycling. After accurate research, the association ONLUSMarafiki primary school, based in Jesolo (not far from Venice) was chosen; they work on an educational project in the island of Kadaina, Kenya, and from selling cork stoppers they earn funds to sustain this project. In February 2017 a big bin for corks collection was put at the entrance of the school premises in Santa Giustina, whereas other smaller boxes were put in the teachers’ room and in different classrooms, both at Benedetti and Tommaseo premises. During a meeting called to foster and inform about a separate collection, class representatives were also shown the importance of recycling cork and the possibility to reuse it in different ways and fields (green building, car parts, anti-pollution eco-absorbents, acoustic and thermal insulation agglomerates, design objects).
After reading Amoriminformative brochures, the students from grades 1A and 1Gunderstood the importance of the project and enthusiastically brought to school numerous corks.
On the 10th of June, there was a final meeting with 2 representatives of the nonprofit associationMarafiki primary school, who showed a video about the Kenyan school they support. After that, the students presented them with the corks collected and confirmed their intention to continue collaborating to support the school in Kadaina.
