C1 Transnational meeting HAMBURG

  • “The Art of Recycling and Reuse" 4th April – 8th April 2016 Hamburg

    • This is the Headmaster's welcome speech to all delegations:

"Good morning, bon jour, buenos días, buongiorno, moin moin!

    Dear friends,
I am so glad to welcome you to Hamburg. We are delighted to have you here to participate and share in the first Erasmus+ week hosted by Gymnasium Altona.
    I am especially glad
to welcome the  French delegation from Agen, who could not take part in the preparation meeting in Venice last November, on account of the terror attacks in Paris.  These events and the present political situation, in general, make it evident that European cooperation does not come naturally. Nationalistic movements, which can nowadays be seen in many countries, try to reduce the European idea to economic and egoistic interests.

As a convinced European, I strongly believe that it is our duty as teachers to keep up a European idea that stands for international solidarity and responsibility. Like we do with our project “The art of recycling and reuse” - this project that stands for the idea “Think globally, act locally!”. This is a pretty old slogan which I probably heard for the first time more than 30 years ago when I was still going to school myself. It was the time when in Germany people started to think about waste production. Recycling systems were introduced and plastic bags became unpopular – Jute stat Plastik. Another slogan from that time, advertising bags made of cloth instead of plastic. I even remember school projects concerning the subject of waste reduction and recycling.
And now? More than 30 years later? Haven't we made any progress? Do we still need a project like that?
In fact, we have reached a record high of waste production! 3.5 million tons of waste are produced globally PER DAY!! And researchers estimate that this amount will have doubled by the year 2025. So there are many good reasons, why we are doing this project.
But apart from all that, this project brings together students and teachers from 4 countries who will hopefully have a lot of fun during the next few days. Anja von Seth prepared a great sounding programme in which I will try to participate as often as possible.
And before I hand over to Anja, who will outline the programme, I want to say once more: welcome!
It's a pleasure to have you here. Have a good time!

    Herzliche Grüße

    Stefan Grübel
    Schulleiter"

    • Elisa Cordones, FOL (Formación y Orientación Laboral) teacher at vocational studies and Carmen F Nevado, English teacher and Coordinator of the project, were the accompanying teachers. Daniel Alaminos, Alejandro Ruiz (4 ESO-CompulsSecondarydary Education) and Alba Rivera (3 ESO), were the students who enjoyed this experience.

There was a reception at school and the Erasmus week was inaugurated with a concert by some students and a presentation of the Stomp Project ( a musical project).

We had an eTwinning workshop to get to know how the platform works.

We visited a Recycling Center and had a guided tour around the facilities.

We visited Stilbruch (stylistic incongruity) department store for furniture and all sorts of things “rescued” by the staff of the recycling center or directly brought there by citizens.

And also to some UPCYCLING shops.

Visit Energy Hill Georgswerder (guided tour)   40 meters above sea level; seven million cubic meters of waste lie beneath a revegetated protective barrier; a fascinating place with a unique history; exhibition and multimedia show inform about renewable energy, modern waste management, and recycling methods.

Visit Remida Recycling Centro   Information on the history and concept of Remida; choosing of material for the artistic workshop.

We learned to use creativity as a way to implement our project.

Activity “Hamburg cleans up”  Cleaning beaches and green near the school; more than 100 participants from Gymnasium Altona plus European delegations.

    Creative workshop with Remida material.

Visit “Hanseatische Materialverwaltung” in the harbor   (Hanseatic Material Management); guided tour

A pool of material for social, environmental or creative projects: After each film direction,

an event, after each exhibition in Hamburg – apart from the actual waste - incredibly large amounts

of different materials are disposed of in containers every day. To anyone who works in this industry, it is clear that

this procedure costs much money damages the environment and is definitely senseless. Because at the

same time there is the urgent need for precisely these materials for countless creative projects. The HMV

compiles the materials and objects in a central warehouse, thus achieving an open equipment pool by which

new ideas can be put into practice.

Students rehearsing on the presentation of their works.

    Daniel Alamino's presentation:

    Alejandro and Alba's:

A couple of weeks before the mobility, we had been to a radio interview to talk about this experience and back in Spain, we even appeared in a local newspaper, Huelva Información.

    • Having fun!
