Following this tutorial elaborated by Pilar Carmona, a Biology teacher, consisting of several workshops on urban solid waste,
Two interesting workshops on how to make recycled paper have been carried out at school in our two-year project (one with blue pigment, another one in pink). Students at 3ESO (3rd year of Compulsory Secondary Education) were really involved and motivated in such an enticing activity.
First, we made frames out of discarded wood and bought metallic grids to use as sieves.
Second, after collecting recycled paper, from school notebooks, writing paper, magazines, and newspapers, we introduced them into a container full of water.
A couple of days later, we added color pigments and turned it into a soft mixture.
Then, it was sieved, pressed and rinsed carefully. We let it dry for 24 hours and the result....rough paper!
We used these creations to decorate our notice boards.
With this workshop, students became aware of how much paper we throw away, how much water it is consumed and how many pollutants are present in papers, books, magazines, etc.
