A15 Making soap with used oil (Huelva)

    • Wednesday 17th March, a workshop to make eco-soap. As a reminder of how our ancestors made it with used cooking oil, students at 1º, 2º, 3, and 4º ESO enjoyed this session. Teachers also did!

    • Eli and Rocío, who work at the school canteen, have been collecting used oil for our experiment.

    • Sara, a volunteer who showed all of us how to make high-quality soap. Caustic Soda (sodium hydroxide), water, used oil and patience equals SOAP!!! Pilar Carmona and Miguel A Criado, Science teachers, helped to explain the whole process in a didactic way. Elisa Cordones, Carmen Olmedo and I Carmen F Nevado, monitored.

    •   Caustic Soda is very dangerous, it can produce serious injuries on our skin when you add water, it reaches a high temperature.

    • We reused tetra bricks and other recipients as moulds for our soap.

    • Students could take home a sample of our school-made soap production.

    • This soap is a good remedy for persistent stains like grass, chocolate, blood ... if Ph is around 7, it is also good for our skin. So reusing oil contributes looking  after the environment, we've learnt not to throw oil down the drain or toilets because it will flow into the rivers and the sea, killing plants and animals.
    • Students attending the workshop will make presentations to their partner groups in order to make people aware of the importance of reusing.
