Shoscombe Pupil Reports Bordeaux

  • Shoscombe School visit to Bordeaux as part of the ERASMUS PROJECT   By Finlay

    8th October to 13th October 2016

I was one of a group of 5 boys from Shoscombe School who flew to Bordeaux on Saturday 8th October 2016.  We were met at the airport by Mrs Hampton & Mrs Gascoigne ready for our flight and everything went well during the flight.

We were met at Bordeaux airport by our host family.  We travelled back to their home with them, we were shown around the house including our bedroom, and then we all went to the park until tea-time.

Sunday we all got ready and went to Lacanau Beach, where we had fun climbing on boulders and making a den out of dry sticks.  We walked into Lacanau town and had some lunch, before returning to the beach for some more fun. Then we went home had tea and watched a movie.

Monday we all met at Ecole Elementrie (Bordeaux school), as well as the children from Shoscombe & St Julian's there were also children from Spain, Greece & Denmark. We all took a bus into Bordeaux City Centre to explore.  We went to the Water Mirror it is a large reflecting pool of water.

We walking over the Pont Jacques Chaban-Delmas suspension bridge which crosses the Garonne River to the right bank quartier de la Bastide.

The picture shows the Pont Jacques Chaban-Delmas suspension bridge which can be lowered and then raised to allow ships to pass underneath.

Then we walked along the river toPont de pierre,or "Stone Bridge" in English, as we crossed over the bridge we were able to see Napoleon's name on the side of the bridge. After our pack-lunch which we had in the park we visited the Bordeaux cathedral, it is a very beautiful building.  We then returned walking along the other side of the riverbank, then caught the bus back to school.

Tuesday we went to Ecole Elementrie (Bordeaux school) .  We helped some French students make a bridge out of plastic bottles for our ceremony while the other boys from Shoscombe and St Julian's talked about England to the children in the reception class (this year 1 in Bordeaux schools).

School hours in Bordeaux were different to ours at Shoscombe, most days the school started at 08:20 and finished at 17:30, but on Wednesday the school day ended at 11:30 giving the children an afternoon off.  Also the time the children had lunch changed depending on which day of the week it was.

Wednesday we went into some of the classes to show them presentations about our local bridges. We finished school early so our host family took us out for the afternoon and we were lucky enough to be taken to a Fun-fair (they called it a Carousel park) where we had great fun on the rides.

Thursday we went into school to do some more presentations before leaving for the airport and travelling home.

I had a fantastic time, enjoyed meeting lots of new people and exploring Bordeaux.

    Thank you!!!
