Project meeting in Tenerife

February 25-March 1, 2019

02/25/2019. - Monday

Today was the first day of school at the 'IES San Juan de la Rambla' grammar school, where teaching starts at 8am, just like at home. Following the solemn opening ceremony, which was complemented by the Director's welcome speech and the performance of the instrumental choir, the students gave us 3 lectures on the Canary Islands. The first was the location and demographic characteristics of the island, which revealed, among other things, that the archipelago is just 97 kilometers off the coast of Morocco and that there are about 1 million people on the island of Tenerife. After that, there were a few words about his climate, for example, the importance of the pass winds. The third lecture was on environmental issues, highlighting air pollution as the most serious problem to which most of the electricity and transport contribute. After the presentations and a dozen, we visited the town hall where the mayor gave a welcoming speech, telling us a little about the history of the town and the island. After that everyone had a free afternoon enjoying a long walk (my host, some of his friends and myself) along the beach.

02/26/2019. - Tuesday

Today, for the first time, we played 'taboo', with words naturally related to the topic of climate change. Next, similar to Frekot's teaching, we examined water samples under a microscope, looking for various tiny organisms. We also found them with more or less success, such as mosquito larvae, which, by the way, were quite easy to find because they are visible to the naked eye. Surprisingly, the island has no rivers or streams, so our water samples came exclusively from the ocean and lakes. After the microscopic "experiment" we took a bus to 'Puerto de la Cruz', where we visited the local botanical garden. There are no words for this place, you just have to see it. After a visit to the garden, the group spent the afternoon at the local beach.

02/27/2019. - Wednesday

Today we have tested the application developed by our Spanish partners in 'La Laguna'. The application guided us through the historic part of the city as we had to answer questions about the project's theme. The route consisted of a total of 8 stations, where we received questions which, if answered correctly, would result in points, which we could later compare to the others at the end of the game. At the end of our city tour, we had lunch at a local restaurant where we could sample real local cuisine, and then headed for volcano 'Teide', the highest mountain in Tenerife and the Canary Islands, with its height of 3718 meters. On the way, we were introduced to the characteristics of various plant associations. Our trip first led to a smaller exhibition where we watched a short film about the formation of the archipelago and the mountain itself. Then we went to a lookout, which had a wonderful view of Teide and its surroundings. After spending some time there, we went back to school, which we returned to in the evening.

02/28/2019. - Thursday

On the fourth day, before we started our day's program, we were given a lecture on the island's water management. From this we found, among other things, that most of the water used is extracted from the surface. Then we set off to the pine forests of Tenerife, the very pine forests, because the island is covered not only by palm trees and other tropical plants, but also by huge pine forests. After taking a shorter hiking trail, we continued our program at a nursery school where we gained insight into the initiative to restore the island's natural forests. The pine forests on the island were planted for economic purposes in the 16th century. and XVII. century. In this context, the impact of human activity and climate change on wildlife was also discussed. After that we returned to the gymnasium, where everyone went to their afternoon programs.

03/01/2019. -Friday

Today we headed to San Juan de la Rambla, where we started our last tour in Tenerife. Here we first learned about the place's historical past and then walked along the coast to Puerto de la Cruz. Our tour guide at the local nature conservation center gave us an interesting story about the island and talked about the flora of the coast. During the tour we said goodbye to the Atlantic Ocean and the coastline of the island. After the walk, we returned to the gymnasium, where we and our hosts went to get some last souvenirs. Finally, we returned to our hosts to prepare for the return trip.

2019.02.25. - hétfő

A mai nap volt az első az iskolában, név szerint az 'IES San Juan de la Rambla' gimnáziumban - ahol akárcsak itthon - reggel 8 órakor kezdődik a tanítás. Az ünnepélyes megnyitót követően, melyet a igazgató köszöntő beszéde mellett a hangszeres kórus fellépése is kiegészített, a diákok 3 előadást tartottak nekünk a Kanári-szigetekről. Elsőként ennek elhelyezkedéséről és demográfiai jellemzőiről volt szó, amelyből többek között megtudtuk, hogy a szigetcsoport mindössze 97 kilométerre fekszik Marokkó partjaitól, valamint azt is, hogy Tenerife szigetén körülbelül 1 millió ember él. Ezt követően az éghajlatáról esett néhány szó, például megismertük a passzátszelek jelentőségét. A harmadik előadás a környezeti problémákról szólt, a légszennyezést emelve ki, mint legsúlyosabb problémát, melyhez javarészt a villamosenergia termelés és a közlekedés járul hozzá. A prezentációkat és egy tízórait követően pedig meglátogattuk a városházát, ahol a polgármester mondott köszöntő beszédet, mesélve egy keveset a város és sziget történelméről is. Ezek után mindenkinek szabad volt a délutánja, amelyen egy hosszú sétát tettünk (a vendéglátóm, annak néhány barátja és én) a tengerpart mentén.

2019.02.26. - kedd

A mai napon elsőként 'tabu'-t játszottunk, olyan szavakkal, melyek természetesen kapcsolódtak az éghajlatváltozás témájához. Következőnek - hasonlóan Frekot tanárnő foglalkozásához - vízmintákat vizsgáltunk mikroszkóp alatt, különböző apró élőlények után kutatva. Több-kevesebb sikerrel találtunk is bennük, mint például szúnyoglárvát, melyet egyébként meglehetősen könnyű volt megtalálni, hiszen szabad szemmel is látható. A szigeten meglepő módon nincsenek sem folyók, sem patakok, így vízmintáink kizárólag az óceánból és tavakból származtak. A mikroszkópos "kísérlet" után, busszal elutaztunk 'Puerto de la Cruz' városába, ahol a helyi botanikus kertben tettünk látogatást. Erre a helyre nincsenek szavak, ezt egyszerűen látni kell. A kertlátogatás után a csoport a délutánt, a helyi strandon töltötte.

2019.02.27. - szerda

A mai napon a spanyol partnereink által fejlesztett alkalmazást teszteltük 'La Laguna' városában. Az applikáció körbevezetett minket a történelmi városrészben, miközben kérdésekre kellett válaszolunk a projekt témájával kapcsolatban. Az útvonal összesen 8 állomásból állt, ezeken kaptuk meg a kérdéseket, melyek helyes megválaszolása esetén pontokat szereztünk, amelyeket aztán később, a játék végén össze tudtunk vetni a többiekével. A városi túránk befejeztével megebédeltünk egy helyi étteremben, ahol megkóstolhattuk az igazi helyi konyhát, majd tovább indultunk a 'Teide' vulkán felé, mely Tenerife és a Kanári-szigetek legmagasabb hegye is egyben, a maga 3718 méteres magasságával. Útközben ismertették velünk a különböző növénytársulások jellemzőit. Útunk először egy kisebb kiállításhoz vezetett, ahol megnéztünk egy rövidfilmet a szigetcsoport és magának a hegynek a kialakulásáról. Ezt követően egy kilátóhelyhez mentünk, ahonnan csodás panoráma nyílt a Teide-re és környékére. Miután eltöltöttünk ott egy kis időt, visszaindultunk az iskolához, amelyhez estére értünk vissza.

2019.02.28. - csütörtök

A negyedik napon, még mielőtt elindultunk volna aznapi programunkra, a sziget vízgazdálkodásáról tartottak nekünk egy előadást. Ebből többek között azt tudtuk meg, hogy a felhasznált víz legnagyobb részét a felszín alól nyerik. Ezt követően indultunk el Tenerife fenyveseibe, igen fenyveseibe, mert a szigetet nem csak pálmafák és egyéb trópusi növények, hanem hatalmas fenyőerdők is borítják. Egy rövidebb túraútvonal megtétele után, egy faiskolában folytatódott programunk, ahol betekintést nyertünk abba a kezdeményezésbe, melynek célja a sziget természetes erdeinek visszaállítása. Ugyanis a szigeten található fenyőerdőket még gazdasági célokból ültették a XVI. és XVII. században. Ehhez kapcsolódóan szó esett arról is, hogy milyen hatással van az emberi tevékenység és a klímaváltozás az élővilágra. Ezek után visszatértünk a gimnáziumba, ahonnan mindenki szabadon ment délutáni programjaira.

2019.03.01. -péntek

A mai napon utunk a San Juan de  la Rambla nevű településhez vezetett, ahol megkezdődött az utolsó túránk Tenerifén. Itt először megismerkedtünk a hely történelmi múltjával majd a tengerpart mentén átsétáltunk Puerto de la Cruzba. Túravezetőnk, a helyi természetvédelmi központ munkatársa, sok érdekes történettel színesítve mutatta be szigetet, és beszélt a part növényvilágáról is.  A túra közben búcsút vettünk az atlanti óceántól valamint sziget partvonalától. A séta után visszatértünk a gimnáziumba, ahonnan a vendéglátóinkkal néhány utolsó emléktárgy beszerzésére mentünk. Végül visszatértünk vendéglátóinkhoz, hogy felkészüljünk a hazaútra.
