In the beginning of the twenties the Dutch government went searching for workers from other countries. In the countries around the Mediteranean Sea there was a lot of unemployment  so a lot of men wanted to work in the Netherlands. They could come here for work but when the work was finished they had to go back to their own country. They were guest labours. But when the time came to return they didn’t go back to their own country. They liked it better here in the Netherlands because of the welfare. The last couple of years lots of immigrants come to the Netherlands because of their family that lives here (family of the guest labours) and because they are marrying with a Dutchy.

Asylum immigration is a big thing in the Netherlands. The asylum seekers flee their country because of politic, economic or humanitarian reasons. They come to the Netherlands in hope of getting a better life. Anno 2008 most politic refugees that come to the Netherlands are from Irak, Somalia, Syria and Afghanistan. Less than 10000 immigrants come yearly from these countries. But around a thousand people from Syria come monthly. This is why they form the largest group of migrants
