Migration in Spain (1945 - 1955)

  • Migration waves in Spain between 1945-1955

Historical background and reasons for emigrating from their home country

During 1945 and 1955 lots of Spanish people emigrated to Argentina because of the situation Spain had in that period. Places where they most went were Argentina, France and Mexico. But they also moved to Chile, Colombia, Cuba, The Dominican Republic, The Soviet Union, The United States and The United Kingdom. They mostly went to France because it was the closest place, for example Catalan people were the ones that had it closer. Between the 15th and the 19th centuries, Argentina was one of the colonies of the Spanish Empire; so when there was a bad condition in Spain a lot of people went there because they spoke the same language and they had more or less the same culture.

The Second World War was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945. At the end of the war, their homes were destroyed, so that a lot of people emigrated from their country to another place looking for a better place to live with better conditions. It involved most countries of the world including all the great powers eventually forming two opposed military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. It was the most widespread war in history, and directly involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. Throughout the conflict the Spanish position was officially neutral and non-active during the belligerence. However, on both sides, there was participation of Spanish soldiers. Some facts that made people went out from Spain were  mostly related to the crisis situation caused by the civil war: misery, poverty, hunger, rationing, lack of work, etc.

The Spanish Civil War had taken place jus previously the beginning of the Second World Word, from 1936 to 1939. It was a fight between the Republicans (who were loyal to democracy, with a left tendency and in alliance with the Anarchist) against the conservative group (a large aristocratic group, falangist and nationalist) led by General Francisco Franco. After this war a lot of people also had to emigrate because of political reasons and beliefs.

(Effects of this immigration waves and reasons for immigrating into Spain)

    Effects of the immigration:

1- The work force is cheaper.
2- If an immigrant come in a country where they have a different cultur, the immigrant put their culture in this country, so there are different types of cultures.
3- In some cities, young people make jobs that older people made when they where younger, so, in a demographic level, vacancy are covered.
4- When immigrants come in a country, there are more people that buy something to eat, so there is a increase of consumption (turism).
5- In Spain, there has been a population growth because many immigrants have come.

This points are good effects that cause when immigrant comes, but the but effects when immigrant comes in an other country are:
1- There is an illegal increase of prostitution, drug business, delinquency..
2- There are more households, but with a less level that the country planned.
3- There is a tax evasion and is more difficult to find a job, because if two people want to get a job and they have the same ability, but one is an immigrant person and the other not,  a boss of a company will prefer the immigrant, because this person is trying to find a job, and he/she don't care if the boss don't pay correctly, because the immigrant only want to earn money. So, the people of this country will find difficult to get a job.
4- This point is related to point number three, because of this people can't get a job, there are more people in poverty.
    5- Exploitation of undocumented workers.
