Migration in the Netherlands (1945 - 1955

  • Holland - MArieke

It's the End of  ww2. People are coming home from all over the world, back from fleeing.

not everybody envisioned a future for themselves in the Netherlands. In the period from 1945 until 1955 more than two hundred thousand people emigrated to destinations all over the world.

Between 1949 and 1975 thousands guest workers emigrated from Italia to Holland. Most came from poor parts. There was a high unemployment rate, and the young workers saw a better future in the Netherlands. They worked in the mines.

On 27 december 1949, Indonesia became officially  independent. In de following years over 300.000  People left Indonseia, to live in Holland. This were people who had moved out of holland but also people who had been born there.

The Dutch government decided to stimulate emigration in 18950, since the whole country was depressed since ww2. They used a lot of propaganda. Between 1950 and 1964 half a million people would move to Canada, Australië, de Verenigde Staten, Nieuw-Zeeland en Zuid-Afrika. Reasons for people were: not knowing your future, low wages, the Cold War,. However, one third would come back to holland

The years after 1945 were shaped by people in motion as well. The forced mobility of diverse groups of people (refugees, people expelled from their homes through territorial exchange and other so-called displaced persons) altered the structure of the German population. Tensions and conflicts with local residents arose with the influx of refugees and expellees. Socio-cultural and confessional differences, in particular, gave rise to disputes. The number of refugees and expellees only first began to decline at the end of the 1940s. Simultaneously, the growing demand for labor soon outstripped the capacity of the labor force. The labor shortage was particularly acute in the fields of agriculture and heavy industry.

The Netherlands was in a state of shock after the second world war. The whole country was devastated and in ruin. the Dutch people were scared of a depression among the citizens and the economy. With the shortage of food, the Neterlands was forced to step back to agriculture for food. This wasn't people for all of the Dutch citizens because there wasn't enough room for agriculture. The Netherlands was already in need of housing space and agriculture wasn't their main priority.

Together with not having enough space, many immirgrants from the Dutch East Indies were seen as 'unwanted' and 'too much of a burden'.  The Dutch people already had trouble with keeping their own people alive, they wouldn't care to think about others.  With a campain, the Dutch government made people enthousiatic about moving to other countries such as: Canada, Australia, the USA and New Zealand. In the end, half a million Dutch citizens moved towards these destinations because of uncertainty of wages and a thread of a third world war.
