Migration in the Netherlands (1976 - 1985)

  • Immigration in the Netherlands between 1976 - 1985

The first and second oil crisis were big events during this time period. During the first oil crisis, many people lost their jobs. The Dutch unemployment rate had risen from almost none to four percent, the government saw this and found it alarming. When the Dutch government annulled a law, which stated that in every neighbourhood there shouldn't be more than 5 percent of immigrants, many illegal immigrants came to the Netherlands, The supervision on illegal immigrants workers wasn't strict, so many illegal immigrants came here to find work and many could find work because of the unstrict supervision. In1974 the government decided to make the supervision much stricter and many illegal immigrants lost their job.

These illegal immigrants had one last chance to get their permit, 18000 immigrants filed their request for a permit.

During the second oil crisis, the Netherlands needed cheap workers because of the economic crisis that hit the Netherlands around 1979, but many unions tried to defend the jobs of the native Dutch people, so around 40 percent of the immigrant workers lost their jobs, This caused for many immigrants to migrate back to their home country.
