Migration in the Netherlands (1996 - 2005)

  • From 1999 until 2001 there was a big migration wave, around 40.000 people asked for a permit every year.

     

    In 2003, there was a slightly negative migrationsaldo in the Netherlands. This was the first time this happened sinds 2003. The amount of immigrants from Maroc and Turkey strongly decreased. In 2004 the amount of Maroccan immigrants was 3,7 thousand, 1,2 thousand less than in the year before. The amount of Turkish immigrants decreased from 6,7 to 4,6 thousand. Also, the amount of immigrants from Suriname and the Dutch antilleased.

    In the 1990's, 120 thousand asylum seekers migrated to the Netherlands, because of political and economical reasons. The highest peak was in 1994, with 52,6 thousand asylum seekers. In 2004, the amount of asylum seekers in the Netherlands decreased, partly due to the stricter policy that was introduced.
