Immigration waves between 1956 and 1965 in Hungary
The historical background:
After World War II., Hungary was under the influence of the USSR. The politics of the Soviet-imposed government led to an uprising. The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 lasted from 23 October until 10 November 1956. On 4 November, a large Soviet force invaded Budapest and other regions of the country. The Hungarian resistance continued until 10 November. Over 2,500 Hungarians and 700 Soviets were killed in the conflict, and 200,000 Hungarians left the country as refugees.

Reasons why Hungarian refugees left their home country between 1956 and 1965:
After the revolution was defeated 200.000 people fled as refugees. The reasons why they left Hungary:
- they were afraid of the new government’s political repression and possible economic decline
- in hope of a better way of life in the western countries (Austria, Germany, the USA)
- the Russian control of the education system (they told the Hungarian schools what to teach)
- they were afraid of the ÁVH (secret police)
- lack of freedom
- they were afraid of the revenge after the uprising was defeated
