On our first day of Job-shadowing, after a 10-minute ride by Uber (3.19 kilometers) to Colegio Ábaco, we met Lance Gutierrez – Languages Coordinator. He informed us that they have already received some participants from the Erasmus Project but that they have never visited other countries involved in this project and that they would like to do so in the future. Then, we were introduced to Director Pedro Del Hierro who welcomed us. Lance took us to see the facilities and we learned a lot of information:
- It is a relatively new building, being a private school governed by the “charter” management model, which means that they have autonomy in their administration but also follow government guidelines.
- It is a 3-storey U-shaped building, frequented by about 1600 students. On the left side, on the first floor, is the space reserved for the “Infantil” (Kindergarten) which is frequented by children from one year of age. On the second floor are students from 1st to 3rd years and on the top floor are students from 4th, 5th and 6th years. The right side of the building is intended for the Secondary. There is a pavilion with an indoor pool, canteen and an auditorium. The playground is concentrated in the middle of the U-shaped building.
- It is a bilingual school, where students start from the first year of age to learn English and from the age of 3, 35% of their curriculum is taught in English. This model includes learning the French language, robotics and plastic expression.
- In the first cycle, 5 sessions of 45 minutes each are dedicated to teaching the English language and the French language is taught in two sessions.
- Students wear uniforms.
Regarding the observation of teaching practice, this took place in a very enthusiastic way, as we found that classes are taught entirely in English, with great oral interaction between teachers and students. At the beginning of the class, we had the opportunity to make a brief presentation and answer questions asked by the students, where we could see how easy they were to communicate.
The students also showed a great interest and motivation for learning.
At the end of our first day of job-shadowing we returned to our accommodation by metro.
