The UK
We take our students to a range of careers events each year to ensure they are well-equipped with a wide range of IAG (Independent Advice & Guidance) before making decisions once they leave us.
This year for the first time, every department was given its own Employability Coordinator, who looks after work-experience placements and organizes them for students to ensure that as many students as possible have some experience before they leave college and last academic year, 2016-17, over 60% of our students successfully completed some form of work experience with the vast majority of those being in the areas of career interest for those individuals.
This year we held our own Careers Fair on campus and invited other schools to join us in speaking to employers, finding out information about skillsets, and getting IAG from The Point, a local service provided by Greenwich Council. Throughout the day, over 500 students from both ours and other colleges took part and came to get advice and guidance from employers including banks / finance sector, the military/ public services, etc.
March 2nd, 2017, we took students to the Greenwich Vocational Progression Fair held at another local college, Greenwich College, in Plumstead, where students were able to speak to a range of employers offering apprenticeships that will give them entry to a range of employability options.
We also took our students to another local college that teaches HE (Higher Education a bit like a university) Ravensbourne College where they were given the opportunity to test out equipment and create products with a view to gaining creative skill sets for the Creative Media Sector.
Students also visited a UCAS convention, which is specifically aimed at learners who are continuing at the university level (HE) by helping provide information about a variety of courses on offer as well as details on campus life and what each course may lead to in terms of careers.
