Sport activities were organized through the year in our school because we believe that it’s a way to bring students close to each other, to socialize, to cooperate and to escape from the strict teaching schedule. Beyond the above benefits we strongly believe that sports is a way to prevent students from dropping out school. More specifically our project team “High school drop outs: One is too many” organized a basketball tournament where our main aim was to involve the risk group students. After spotting the high risk students at the beginning of the year, we encourage them to participate in this tournament among with any other student who wanted to participate in this activity.
This activity took place from February to April 2017 at school gym. 8 teams participated in the Basketball tournament, 4 were consisted of male students and the other 4 of female. Each team consisted of 5 players. A total of 40 students participated in the activities. The tournament was organized once a week at the school break (10:50-11:15). Each match was played in 20 minutes
After the end of the tournament a questionnaire study was conducted to measure the success of the activity with all 40 students participating in the activity. According to the results obtained from the questionnaires; 98% of the students are quite satisfied to get involved in such events. 92% of the participants in the activity found very useful because they realize in such a short time of the value of cooperation. Besides, 67% of the participants stated that this activity made them fell like belonging in the school environment and 83% pointed out that the organization of such activities must be conducted more often.
Both the participants and the audience enjoyed the tournament and stated that those activities gave students the opportunity to establish stronger relationships and feel as a part of the real community.
