We celebrated Europe Day 2022
Every year, May 9 is associated with the celebration of Europe Day. This day we commemorate the anniversary of the historic “Schuman Declaration” of 1950. It outlines the idea of a new form of political cooperation in Europe, in which war between European nations would become unthinkable. Robert Schuman's proposal is seen as the beginning of building up a community of countries that we call the European Union now. The pupils of the Year 5 to 9 had drawn one European country from the list in advance. At home, they had studied the necessary information about it, prepared pictorial material, and focused on important personalities, points of interest and attractions of the state. The task of the students in each class was to create a poster that would capture the country as much as possible. And so the students cut, drew, glued, wrote. They used their creativity, imagination, but also knowledge. They worked very actively in groups to make the result of their collective work unique. We also commemorated Europe Day in a Math lesson. The 6th graders first repeated the properties of the polygons and drew their first regular 5-pointed star according to the procedure. And so 12 stars were created on the flag of the European Union. This is EUROPE DAY, which is a celebration of peace and unity in Europe, celebrated by us, the students of A. Sládkovič Primary School in Sliač.
DAY OF EUROPE
On 9 May, Slovaks, as well as all the inhabitants of the European Union countries, celebrate the Day of Europe, the establishment of the European Union. And why do we celebrate it on this day?
Few people in Europe seem to know that on 9 May 1950, the first step was taken towards the community we know as the European Union today. Shortly after the end of World War II, which left a huge havoc, the French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, decided to present his proposal on how to prevent the threat of another war in Europe. He focused on regulating coal and steel production. The merger of these two sectors of strong and influential states created an institution called the European Coal and Steel Community. This proposal became known as the Schuman Declaration and is considered to be the beginning of the building of the European Union.
At present, the European Union is a community of 27 states. People in the European Union can travel freely and without barriers and do not even need a passport.
Many EU countries use the common currency, the euro. The European Union provides money to educate students or adults abroad, build new roads or help businesses create new jobs.
Slovakia joined the European Union on 1 May 2004 and has been using the euro as its currency since 1 January 2009.
However, the European Union is doing much more. That is why every year on 9 May we commemorate THE DAY OF EUROPE, which is a celebration of peace and unity in Europe. On this day, the nations of Europe realize that working for peace and prosperity brings far more than the devastating effects of war.
We also remembered and celebrated this day together with the students of our school. We were engaged in various activities. Younger pupils created the flag of the European Union and painted the flags of European countries. Older pupils solved the quizzes about Europe and the euro, searched the pairs of famous European monuments in a memory game, and worked with a map, to which they assigned individual countries. Some pupils prepared a notice board for their classmates, and during the whole week, during breaks, everyone could read a lot of interesting things on the TV screen in the school lobby where a presentation with a lot of information was available.
