16.1 Learning activity in Sliač, Slovakia

  •

ZŠ A. Sládkoviča in Sliač is responsible for Geography, Maths and Art, so the Learning activity in Sliač was focused on these subjects. Pupils were divided in international teams and participated in many activities:

Geography: We participated in the guided tour through Sliač to learn more about this spa town. Our guides were Slovak teachers and pupils. We also met a traveller who was presenting her journey to Iceland. We visited Banská Bystrica where a nice activity was prepared. Pupils in international teams were in the role of guides. Each team got information about some sights of the city and had to present them to the others. Then we went to the Historic school of Jozef Mistrík in Špania Dolina where we learnt about copper mining in this area and we also visited one of the old drifts. As we were in an old school, pupils were also allowed to try out to write with a quill which was very funny for them. We visited the Maximilian Hell Regional Observatory and Planetarium in Žiar nad Hronom where we watched the night sky and learnt about the universe, about its exploration and about the threats from the universe represented by asteroids.

Maths: Pupils in their international teams had to solve different mathematical riddles relating to arithmetic, geometry and logic. They also played Jeopardy focused on mathematical knowledge and the board game Financial Odyssey focused on development of financial literacy that was prepared by the Slovak partners especially for this learning activity. It was a funny way to learn Maths.

Art: There were prepared different art workshops connected with the coming Christmas holidays. Pupils learnt how to create nice decorations from a wire, how to make candles from beeswax, how the blueprint (a traditional Slovak craft) is produced, how to bake wafers and many other activities. We also learnt about the traditions of the St Lucia festival that are still common in Slovakia. We also visited Kováčová and its thermal waterpark, so we did some sports too. The participants of the learning activity were pupils and teachers of our four schools that participated in the project and also some members of the local community who prepared the activities and workshops for us (the traveller, some organisers of the art workshops). We also met the mayor of Sliač. Maths, Geography and Art are taught in all of our schools and we learnt new activities that can be used in these subjects. The communication language of the learning activity was English, so we used the CLIL method to learn these content subjects. We took many photos and recorded some videos that we want to use for creating the tutorials for teaching Maths, Geography and Art in English (CLIL method). Pupils who participated in the learning activity will create presentations and videos about the activities that they learnt in Sliač and they will share their new experiences with their schoolmates. We all got the board games created by the Slovak team and can play them at our schools.

THE GAMES WE PLAYED DURING THE MEETING:

    Jeopardy:

It is a Maths quiz focused on Maths knowledge. The pupils played the quiz in groups. They could choose 8 questions of five categories connected with Maths: Geometry, Mathematical operations, Numbers, Fun Maths and Length units. The questions had a different value, from 100 to 500 points. The questions for 100 points were the easiest ones, the questions for 500 points were the most difficult ones. the group with the highest number of points was the winner.

    Financial odyssey:

Money is very important in human´s life. We couldn´t afford to buy food, a dream mobile or pay for our housing without it. However, to have money all the time, we must learn to know its value.

We would like to drag you, thanks to the game „Financial odyssey“,  into the world of finances. You will earn and spend money as well.

We wish to all pupils a lot of success and good financial decisions.
