  • Decalogue: To Be More Employable in Lithuania

    1. Show you’re curious person. The person who is curious will be able to learn easily, he’ll be interested in the innovations and the latest trends; also, he’ll have more energy than the one who will not. ‘Curiosity is one of the most important qualities the person can show to me’ – says the L’Oréal manager of employee research in The Baltic States Nerijus Juzumas.
    2. Improve your programming skills. Nowadays the computer skills are not just ability to work on the basic computer softwares like Microsoft Word or Excel. The employers are more interested in those who know how to code. Programming skills not only make you more employable in your current workplace but, as you improve; they make you one hell of a hot commodity. Dedicated programmers cost a ton. So much so that the hiring of young college graduates creates a lot of turnover. The flip side of this is that a valued employee with some programming ability improves their salary prospects and job retention while still saving the company money.
    3. Know the languages. Lithuanian economy is becoming more open and world wide. To diversify the business, the company has to avoid working in the same direction. Knowing various languages helps to communicate with the wider spectrum of different cultures. Apart English, German, French, Spanish and Italian – the most useful languages in Europe, Swedish and Norwegian languages are two of the most valuable to any company.
    4. Improve your salesmanship skills. Salesmanship skills are some of the most valuable to any organization. There isn’t a company in the world that doesn’t value the employee that makes them more money than they cost.
    5. Gain different kinds of experience. If you don’t have an opportunity to get some work experience by working at the company, catch all chances to participate in various seminars, conferences, courses, projects or organizations. Some kind of volunteering can give you the similar practice to the one you’ll need in your future job. Studying abroad is also a good experience.
    6. Be able to solve the problems. Many employers appreciate worker’s ability to find solutions when faced with difficulties or setbacks. Research shows that 84 % of Lithuanian employers have missed the young person’s ability to solve the problem, so having this ability would raise you in the eyes of 84% of Lithuanian employers.
    7. Be adaptable and effective learner. Employees who know how to adjust themselves to new environment, willing to learn new things (quick learners) and perform their best in changes are likely to be the best performers in any organization.
    8. Be self-Motivated: A good employee never hesitates of taking responsibility or a more responsible position. The person is also ready to work beyond the call of duty in order to meet goals or to solve problems; even if the job in discussion is not one of the regular works he is usually assigned.
    9. Improve your communication skills. Employers love to hire employees who have the ability to communicate well and express themselves in a clear manner, whether in writing or speaking. Inaccurate/inappropriate communication between employees can cause many problems to the company
    10.  Be integral. In labor market this quality is extremely important because not many people have it. Integral person has to be able to match his attitude, emotions, beliefs and mindset. Also the person has to be honest to himself and to his employer and able to integrate into any kind of collective.
