Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: quality education

  • Sustainable development begins with education

Quality education is a fundamental right, not an option. If you want to learn some facts about quality education, check out this short video:

Okay, but what exactly was the SDG 4 created for? What is it especially interested in? You can understand it in just 90 seconds:

Do you know any famous people fighting for the quality of education? One of them is Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani activist for female education and a Nobel Prize laureate. Here is a part of her speech:

There will be no school without students and without teachers. World Teachers' Day is celebrated on 5th October annually. Its main aim is to underline the role of teachers in promoting quality education among students of all ages, according to the rule of lifelong learning.

When you hear or read the words "quality education", what are your main associations?

Thanks to our partners, Slovak students started to consider educational factors, circumstances and goals more. First we went through all the materials our Polish friends prepare.

Then we were reading articles and also watching other videos to learn more about basic skills and general information that education should provide and develop.

For example these inspirational videos which offer their views of the skills that education systems should focus on:

We also watched some motivational videos like this one where Michelle Obama gives her "Best Advice For Students On How To Succeed In Life"

Afterwards we looked more closely at specific aspects of education in Slovakia, while we focused mainly on the secondary level. We were reading articles and also watching videos.

After our research and discussions, we summarised our ideas in the materials you can find in the first Twinboard below.

Then we studied features of educational systems in Scandinavian countries which are world-known for best educational policies. Students summarised the information in their presentations:

Students also created some questionnaries to do research among students to collect their opinions on education skills, goals and methods of evaluation/examination:

  • What general knowledge should secondary school students gain?

Basic general knowledge by Adela, SK

It is well known that Slovak educational system is on a good level. Grammar schools offer a huge variety of subjects. Students who chose grammar school should know that this type of school is harder, and expectations are higher too. But I think there should be a few changes because there is a way too much information to learn for a student.

In today’s world there is a lot of information and I mean A LOT. But in my opinion, there are some things every single person on this planet should know:

Basic general knowledge by Nikola, SK

For example our history - it is perhaps the most important of all the things to learn about, because it tells us what life was before us, what our ancestors were, what were the customs, traditions… In short, without it we would have no idea what has shaped our present and future.

Basic general knowledge by Jakub, SK

Of course our mother tongue is the most important part of basic knowledge because it’s the main way how to communicate

I think that a graduating student needs general knowledge mainly about the world around him and that is by science (combination of biology, chemistry and physics). Then s/he needs to learn some basic historical events and time periods, not to repeat the same mistakes. Then about finance, economy and their main concepts, like insurance, saving money, banking system and interest rate and ...

    General knowledge by Tatiana, SK

English is one of the most important subjects because it's used worldwide and the other language should be elective. There should be a list of options from which we can choose from.

    General knowledge by Dominika, SK

A 19-year-old student of a secondary school should have some general knowledge form all aspects of life – grammar, literature, number operations, civic affairs, arts and others. They should speak at least one foreign language on a level that provides basic communicative needs. They should know how basic actions in the world work – basic physical, chemical and biological actions. They should recognize plants and animals located in the vicinity. They should speak and behave assertively among others. They should know many other things and use them through their lives.
