Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12: responsible consumption and production

  • Your birthday, nameday, Christmas, Easter, Valentine's Day, the end and / or the beginning of the school year, anniversaries and other celebrations are always the occassion to give and get presents. But... do we really need all the things we buy, get and give?

The fact is presents are only the top of the consumption/production mountain. We are so used to use things like shower, car (or two or more cars), fridge or even a toothbrush we cannot imagine our life without these objects.

Maybe it's time to realise the presence of these (it would seem) obvious things is... not so obvious for everyone?

First of all, let's have a look at the presentation and play the game described in it. Do it with your classmates, step-by-step, slide-by-slide and remember to be careful about its real meaning! Your teacher will support you for sure!

Now read the texts below and think about the situation of James, Lorena, Adrienne and Surya. Do you see the similarities and differences between their attitudes towards consumption and production? In your opinion, what does the attitude towards consumption and production depend on?

Slovak students decided to monitor the situation on the streets in our town. They wanted to know if we (our town citizens) are responsible consumers. They found out so much litter there that they started to organise "Picking Up Litter" events. They decided to do it regularly.

First, we cleaned our areas before Christmas on 22nd December 2021, after New Year´s Eve on 7th January 2022, and then on 19 March 2022 and 14th April...

Here are some photos of those events. They are the direct evidence that we are really not able to control our consumption, we consume too much and take a little respect for our environment.

Good news is that random passers-by commented on student´s activities with appreciation: "You are a younger generation...You are our hope..."

Finally, let's check your ecological footprint connected with consumption and production. To do it, you need to complete the ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT CALCULATOR sheet:
