Interview with Mr Pavliska, Deputy Mayor of Frýdlant nad Ostravicí, Czech Republic

    Hello

Are you interested in the environment?

Yes, I’m interested in the environment. As our city is often called “The gate of the Beskydy mountains” we care about the environment in our town. We try to improve it as much as possible.

What’s your opinion on the environment in Frýdlant nad Ostravicí?

Some of the citizens think that the environment isn't good or that we (as the environmental department) don't care enough about it. In my opinion, it isn't true at all. I think we should be grateful about where we live and about the environment in Frýdlant nad Ostravicí. I would not say that there is no space for improvement but in my point of view, our town has a very good condition of the environment. Of course, we are not happy about bark beetles in our region but we are not able to influence that the environmental department is given a lot of money and I am really grateful about that.

Do you sort waste, optionally biowaste?

The office is trying to sort waste. I personally sort waste in my house too. I don't have to walk really far away to get to the containers just like the people who live in the town centre and its surroundings. That's the reason why I think that sorting the waste is very comfortable for them. Those people who don't live in the town centre - eg. Nová ves, Lubno or Nová dědina don't have the containers as close to their homes as we would like to.  I think that we have some possibilities there. But in some matching tests and surveys we end up well, speaking about the sorting waste. We collect biowaste in brown containers in our town. They are collected every other week.

Do you think that the amount of containers is sufficient? Or do you think that the amount of them is way too high or on the other hand, way too low?

Speaking about the centre of Frýdlant, their amount is sufficient. If you mean surroundings of Frýdlant (Nová ves, Lubno, Nová dědina villages) I think the amount of containers there isn't sufficient. If someone has to walk far away just to sorte waste, they would rather just throw it into communal waste. But if they didn't have to walk that far away they would be more motivated to sort out waste.

Do you think the containers are emptied enough?

Yes, they are definitely emptied enough but there is sometimes a container that has a “rough time” and it is full. When someone sees these full containers they put trash next to the container. If this situation happens often in some place we collect the containers more often there.

Is there an electronic waste container near your home?

    Yes, there is.

Have you ever been engaged in a "cleaning up" of the city?

    I haven't been engaged yet.

Do you like the idea of this event?

Yes, of course. But on the other hand, why should I collect someone else's trash? I think that tidiness should be automatic. Anyhow, I like to see these events eg in the surroundings of our river.

What do you think about the new law by EU, which is prohibiting one-way usage plastic?

I have heard about this law before. For example I have heard about discussion if PET bottles are going to be just as returnable as glass bottles. I don't see any radical move in this. I think that we sort plastic pretty well. Of course, I agree about cancelling one - way usage plastic (plastic straws, plates or cutlery).

Do you know about any "black dump" in Frýdlant and its surroundings?

I don't know about any black dump in Frýdlant. But there was one black dump in Lubno, nearby the village.

Do you have any idea how to prevent creating these "black dumps"?

If a human didn't have containers “under his nose” he would have inclination not to sorte waste or to throw trash into the nature. But we can't get containers everywhere. It depends only on the humans.

Do you think that Frýdlant deserves nickname "the gate of the Beskydy"? If not, why?

    Frýdlant definitely deserves this nickname.

Do you think the project “The city I want to live in” is useful?

Of course, it is useful. Every activity of students like this is useful.

Thank you for your time                                                                    .

    You are welcome.
