My brain tells me that the article for a miraculous recipe for faster brain work is unreliable

After the Erasmus+ workshop about reliability in journalism, I got the task to find one journalistic article that I think is not reliable. I looked it up online and decided for the article posted on the portal DNEVNO.HR.

The article I found unreliable was posted on March 17th, 2021 under the title 'Recipe for miraculous syrup': Just two spoons a day will speed up brain functions, results are astonishing!' The supertitle of the article was 'Brain week'.

The introduction of the article mentions Brain week, the scientific-educational-promotional manifestation held from 15th to 21st of March on the Faculty of Medicine in the University of Osijek. It also states that the main topics of the conference are prevention and impacts on the brain alongside with sleep and sleeping.

After the introductory part, the recipe for faster brain work is mentioned. The ingredients for the potion are horseradish, ginger, honey, lemon, and cinnamon. The author of this recipe was not mentioned nor the scientific evidence that it really improves brain functions. Instead of the sources and evidence for the effectiveness of the recipe the following sentence was served to the reader: 'In the spirit of the manifestation, we bring you the recipe that improves brain functions, improves memory, hearing, and sight'.

In my opinion, the things that contribute to the unreliability of this article are the fact that it was not signed by the author and the illustration that is not connected to the content of the article. I think that it was written with the intention to attract the reader to click on it and contribute to the earnings of the portal. /Anastazija Blagaj, 7B/

Could llamas help us fight coronavirus?

A review of an article published in "Glas Podravine i Prigorja" newspaper

On  17 February 2021 news portal "Glas Podravine i Prigorja" published an article entitled These llamas could help us fight  coronavirus (https://www.glaspodravine.hr/ove-ljame-mogle-bi-pomoci-u-suzbijanju-epidemije-koronavirusa/). The article was written by Matea Konfic.

The title of the article sounds enticing but the article itself does not meet the expectations of the readers. On the contrary, almost the whole article deals with information about raising llamas on the Lončar family estate. Although we are not informed where exactly Lončar family estate is, it is mentioned that it is the only estate in Croatia that raises llamas. The article is full of information about raising llamas, their characteristics, nutrition, digestion, price as well as the quality and price of their wool. Only the last sentence of the article refers to two British scientists who have reported that llama antibodies could be used as a therapy in boosting the immune system. It is not clear how llamas from Lončar family estate are connected with the conclusions of the scientists from a British university.

Expressions such as: „it is said“, „it could help“, „who knows, maybe“ are used in the article and they contribute to the unreliability of information given.

There are no interviewees in the article. The author of the article cites neither llama breeders nor experts (vets, scientists, doctors, etc.) who could support the claim given in the title of the article.

The article would be more convincing if it mentioned an expert's view on how antibodies could help fight coronavirus. The quality of this article would improve if it contained information on what research and further steps are being taken in order to make medicines. Otherwise, it is all just a story.

Workshop Media training: Journalisam and credibility

The credibility of this article results from:

    - demonstrates the level of knowledge for the respective subject.

    - describes step by step the Erasmus + project won by the Gymnasium School Nr. 6 Suceava / Romania

    - used the image of our school which is very suggestive. The statement "A picture is worth a thousand words!" Is very well known.

    - lists the competencies of teachers acquired through mobility. Most people still view these qualifications as attestations of knowledge in that field.

    - Uses a logical flow of information and especially logical arguments

    - Use details and not generalities. There is a much greater attraction to concrete details and arguments, specific than to general, vague ideas. The more you detail what is presented, the more you send the message that what you are saying is correct.

    11. Use examples to illustrate your point

Once gained the trust of a reader, he becomes a contributor, promoter or even client of the blog or site.

ONLINE WORKSHOP ON THE ABC OF MEDIA TRAINING

The students of the 7th grade B within the YOUNG JOURNALIST Project, from the Mihai Eminescu Alexandria Gymnasium School, under the coordination of Voicu-Popescu Corina and Groseanu-Lungu Gina, participated in February 2021 in a workshop on ABC MEDIA TRAINING .

During the activity, an informative material was presented which aimed at:

    What does a journalist do?

    Steps to becoming a journalist.

    Journalism programs.

During the workshop, we started from a topic for the article and made a plan for the article. They took into account: who to ask for information, what will be the questions, what photos will accompany them, discussions with the workshop leader.

Students understood what the news is, how the topics were selected, what are the steps to achieve good news, with an impact on readers.

Following the activity, the students presented the feedback:

The student Draghici Octavian mentions: << The activity was very interesting and now I know what are the steps I have to take to make good news. >>

Student Groseanu Teodora says: << The role of the journalist is very important in making a story; journalists must be motivated and persevering in their efforts to get the best news. >>

Workshop on the basics of media literacy

Our teacher Aleksandra Milutinović held a workshop on the basics of media literacy in our school with grade 6/2 within the Erasmus Plus project "Young journalists of today, responsible social citizens of tomorrow", whose author she is. The workshop has been translated into all the languages of the project partners and students from all schools in the partner countries will learn this month about how to choose topics for an article, how to write a news story, report, interview, etc.

The sixth-graders have shown great creativity in devising topics and headlines for their news and these days we expect them to try out as their authors within our digital school newspaper.

At the beginning of the workshop, we talked about who journalists are,how dynamic and interesting their work is. Then, we talked about what news is, what a report is, a report, an interview, how topics are chosen, and how interlocutors are, and so on. The teacher told the students about how their older friends wrote articles for the school newspaper, how they got to do interviews with some nationally famous actors, athletes, singers.

You can see the evaluation of the workshop and students' suggestions for new articles in the photo gallery:

    HEALTHY and SLIM body!

The subtitle of this article was: You will be healthy every day!

The article has been published 31.1.2020. on the espreso.co.rs

    https://www.espreso.co.rs/lifestyle/zdravlje/503651/ovaj-caj-leci-preko-50-bolesti-svako-jutro-popijte-po-jednu-solju-za-zdravo-i-vitko-telo

The news caught my attention because the article gives the exact recipe for making this tea. They state that it is necessary: honey, ginger, turmeric, cinnamon and cardamom. For each of these ingredients, they individually listed which diseases they treated. The article is not signed, the author is unknown. It does not say where the recipe was taken from. There is no stated opinion of any doctor or scientist.

I find it very frivolous, naive and risky to make drinks like this and use them. The use of such drinks can also have negative consequences for human health.

The article would be useful if it contained the names and number of respondents who used it. These people could express their opinion and experiences with consuming this type of tea. It would be useful to hear the opinions of doctors or scientists.

This is how it looks like someone took a few minutes for the sake of more likes on the Internet and came up with a recipe and a title.
