AROUND US - INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE FROM KOPRIVNIČKI IVANEC

Why is Ivanec embroidery on the list of intangible cultural goods?

In 2011 'The Ministry of Culture and Media' inscribed the art of making Ivanec embroidery into the national 'Registry of Intangible Cultural Goods'. Mrs Nedeljka Vrhoci from Koprivnički Ivanec, who is very skillful at making Ivanec embroidery, reveals what makes it unique and whether it will be preserved in the future. As the head of the embroidery section of  'The Society of Authentic Folklore of Koprivnički Ivanec’ she is engaged in preserving this intangible cultural heritage as well as transfering the skill and love of making the embroidery onto younger generations.

What makes Ivanec embroidery unique and original?

Ivanec embroidery is unique because it is made without any patterns or designs. This makes each embroidery distinctive and special.

What are the characteristics of Ivanec embroidery?

Ivanec embroidery requires great skill, practice, patience, devotion and imagination of the embroiderer. Its unique beauty is defined by destinctive motifs inspired by nature and countryside, the way they are combined, arranged and complemented by different colours. Red is a predominant colour in making Ivanec embroidery but vivid orange, green, purple, blue, black and white are also used.

How is Ivanec embroidery made and what skills are required to make it?

Ivanec embroidery is characterized by precision and various combinations of colours. At the beginning of sewing, no knot is made at the end of the thread, but the thread is simply passed through the fabric all the way to its end to strengthen the starting point of the stitch. After that, the chosen motif is sewn without any patterns. While sewing, the embroiderer must make sure that everything is neat and that the motif is of acceptable size. Ivanec embroidery requires a lot of patience and it must be done calmly, slowly and precisely so the time devoted to making it adds to its value. An experienced embroiderer who sews for about three to four hours a day, takes up to two months to make ‘poculica’ (a woman's embroidered cap) or a year for embroidered sleeves on a female blouse 'plečak'. Therefore, to make Ivanec embroidery it takes a lot of patience and love.

What was decorated with Ivanec embroidery?

First of all, Ivanec embroidery was used as a decoration on various parts of traditional costumes of Koprivnički Ivanec, recognizable throughout the region of Podravina and beyond. Recently, thanks to the imagination of embroiderers, it is used as a decoration on tablecloths, handbags, canvas bags, jewelry, paintings, ties, dolls as well as pens, pagers, and a stamp, which we are especially proud of.

Who made Ivanec embroidery in the past?

In the past, Ivanec embroidery was sewn by women, most often during the winter days when they did not have work around the house or in the field.

Where can Ivanec embroidery be seen today?

Ivanec embroidery can be seen on festive traditional costumes of Koprivnički Ivanec worn by the dancers of 'Lado', the National Folk Dance Ensemble of Croatia, ‘The Society of Authentic Folklore of Koprivnički Ivanec’ (DIF) and 'Folk Dance Ensemble Koprivnica' (FAK).

Who taught you to make Ivanec embroidery?

Doroteja Jakupić and Željkica Marčec taught me to make the embroidery while my grandma gave me the first sewing lessons and she inspired my love for handicrafts. In my free time I do handicrafts and embroidery. I particularly enjoy making unique jewelry, paintings, ties and other artwork with the motifs of Ivanec embroidery.

What do you do to preserve this intangible cultural heritage?

In cooperation with kindergarten teachers I have been able to work with preschool children and pass on my love for the cultural heritage of our village and Ivanec embroidery to them. I enjoy seeing that I have interested them in our heritage and my greatest pleasure is when those children later join my embroidery section at The Society of Authentic Folklore of Koprivnički Ivanec’and improve their skills of making Ivanec embroidery.

Who can still make Ivanec embroidery today? Will this art dispappear in the future?

Thanks to the engagement of all the members of 'The Society of Authentic Folklore of Koprivnički Ivanec’, the art of making Ivanec embroidery has been passed on to younger generations. A few hard-working women do their best to keep it alive and preserve it. Their enthusiasm and love for it make me think that it will not be forgotten and I sincerely hope that younger generations will succeed the hard-working embroiderers who are active today.

How could Ivanec embroidery as intangible cultural heritage be better promoted in our region and throughout Croatia?

Today, Ivanec embroidery as protected intangible cultural heritage is well accepted in our village and beyond. However, there is always room for improvement. It is necessary to educate younger generations, make them aware of its value and encourage them to be creative in applying the embroidery on unique souvenirs that would be recognizable around the world. Young people should be motivated to love and respect the tradition of the region they come from, participate in local folk ensembles, embroidery section, events and exhibitions. I hope that this treasure of our region will not be forgotten and that we will preserve it through various events, education activities and good will.

Etiquette helps to prevent chaos and make us feel more comfortable

No one likes when someone interrupts them speaking, talking with their mouth full so they are understandable. If everyone behaved the way they want to, there would be disorder and chaos like in the stairs when everyone walks as they wish. To prevent chaos, one should move on the right side in the direction of movement. This is just one of the numerous rules recommended by etiquette, and the word etiquette means correct/proper behaviour.

The rules of polite behaviour help people to feel comfortable, too. For example, your neighbour will be glad to greet her in the morning when you meet on the street, and she certainly wouldn't like it if you just walked past her like you didn't notice her. Parents will be glad to see that we know how to use a knife and fork correctly, and our teachers and friends to keep our promises.

We discussed these and many other rules of etiquette with our librarian Stojanka Lesički, during four school classes in the library during the activity "Etiquette Through The Literature". In addition to talking at our gatherings, we also listened to short stories about different types of behaviour. We just laughed at some of them because they were explaining some kinds of inappropriate behaviour in a funny way.

At the end of the last fourth class, we also checked what we learned about etiquette through the Kahoot quiz. The most successful players were Barbara DvečkoKarla Hlebić and  Andrea Burdić. The quiz was interesting and tense to the very end because the ranking at the top was constantly changing. There were also reasons to laugh during the quiz, due to the creative nicknames some students used by signing up to play the quiz. /Lucija Vukoić, 5th a; photo:  S. Fake news museum founded in Croatia

In October 2020,  the Fake news museum  (mvl.hr) and  New media and e-democracy institute (InMed) were founded. The two will gather all information  regarding fake news in one place.

Lordan Prelog, former journalist and editor, now a postgraduate student of  information science at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (University of Zagreb)  is working on gathering communication experts, who will write articles about  media disinformation.

He is, hereby, calling all interested pupils and students to apply to a free media, digital literacy and critical thinking class.  The class’ working title is ’Potjeh in search of Pinocchio’, it’s intended for everyone interested in knowledge and experience. The class will last three weeks and will take place over e-mail.

My mom and I can sign up for the class – we once fell for an internet ad: ‘Take your chance and buy a formal dress 70% off’. We bought the dresses for my cousins wedding. They arrived from China a few weeks later, but they were as small as Barbie doll clothes. My mom doesn’t shop online anymore, instead we go to a store and try the clothes there.

Examine the web page and the ad well, lest it trick you too. Who is the author, can they be trusted?
Don’t open clickbait titles, all they do is attract clicks and money to those who post them. /

      Christmas in Romania.docx

Christmas - A holiday cherished by the Romanians

In our country, the winter holidays traditionally begin with Christmas fasting and last until St. John holiday. It is a period rich in customs, different from one area to another, from one community to another.

The most important moments of the winter holidays are: Christmas fasting (November 15-December 24), Saint Nicholas (December 6), Ignatius feast (December 20), Christmas Eve(December 24), Christmas Day (December 25), New Year (January 1), Epiphany (January 6) and St. John celebration (January 7).

Rehearsals for caroling are being prepared from the beginning of Fasting period until St. Nicholas or even a few days before Christmas. Children use bells, sticks, whips, and the noise made by this whole arsenal is meant to drive away evil forces. Mask games have the same role: Goat, Bear or Horses. The children go with the star (caroling) until December 24, custom found among all Christians, reminding to the people of  the star that announced the birth of Jesus and that guided the three wise men to Bethlehem. Sometimes children carol with Vicleim, a popular theater that depicts scenes from the birth of Jesus. Today, the carol has the function of wishing and announcing the birth of Jesus.

The custom of decorating the Christmas tree is one of the most beautiful traditions. At the end of the 19th century, the Christmas tree was especially decorated in the city. Only after the First World War did this custom become widespread. Nowadays, the decoration of the Christmas tree has become one of the most beloved customs in both rural and urban areas. Moreover, this custom has been adopted on all continents, regardless of the religious affiliation of those communities. Traditionally, the Christmas tree is decorated on Christmas Eve and kept in the house until Epiphany.

On Christmas Day all worries should be dispelled so that each of us can enjoy this Holy celebration properly.

      NEW YEAR PRESENTS.doc

The smile on the faces of children from Ćićevac is bigger this year than ever

In a few days, the New Year is coming, the time when Santa Claus leaves his house at the North Pole and comes to children’s homes around the world. “Santa needs help”, say the good people from “Okular” who organized an awesome action of collecting presents for children this year!

The collecting of donations in order to make presents officially started on the 5th and ended on the 25th of December. In cooperation with the organization “Smile as a gift”, seventy packages were made, and more than a hundred donors participated in the humanitarian action! Donations could be delivered to the stand in front of “Okular”, but that was not the only way for someone to show their kindness. This is shown by the fact that donations arrived even when the stand was not set. Moreover, we had a case when a family from Switzerland remembered their homeland and decided to help make children from Ćićevac smile. Among the local donors are the staff of our Post office and many others.  This year, the action went more than great, we are proud of our “Okular”, which has been making the youngest members of our community happy for a couple of years now.

The citizens of the municipality of Ćićevac have shown that they have a good soul. We have to admit that the thought of seventy children rejoicing in presents this year really warms the heart.

Thank you all, this year you were someone’s Santa!

      AGENDA 2030: Global Goals

The Global Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are to be achieved by 2030. This document was approved in New York on 25 September 2015, when the 193 member countries of the United Nations unanimously adopted the resolution. Thanks to this document all nations are trying to save renewable resources and guarantee a life for future generations, it is made up of 17 goals:

      1. No poverty
      2. Zero hunger
      3. Good health and well-being
      4. Quality education
      5. Gender equality
      6. Clean water and sanitation
      7. Affordable and clean energy
      8. Decent work and economic growth
      9. Industry, innovation and infrastructure

      10.Reduced inequalities

      11.Sustainable cities and communities

      12.Responsible consumption and production

      13.Climate action

      14.Life below water

      15.Life on land

      16.Peace, justice and strong institutions

      17.Partnerships for the goals

This year our school in Gavardo in Italy is working on the Agenda 2030. During the lessons with our teachers and schoolmates we discussed about Global Goals: we learnt that they are very important for the society because they help  people to think about the problems in the world and about the environment.

For us the most important is QUALITY EDUCATION because all children have the right to learn new things, have an education and  know more  things.

Another important goal is GENDER EQUALITY because we  think that  men and women are equal and they have the same rights.

From our point of view there is another very important goal: REDUCED INEQUALITIES, because the people have the right not to feel discriminated for their origins, religions, thoughts and ideas.

We think that the people have to the same opportunities to have a dignified life and  to have enough for a decent life, so all people have to do their best to reach the goal NO POVERTY.

      General elections, December 6, 2020

The electoral ballot for the appointment of the senators and deputies who will represent us in the Romanian Parliament started this morning, at 07.00, on the Romanian territory and in the other states on the same time zone. In other parts of the world, Romanian citizens residing in those areas started voting even almost a day before. But the official time of Romania, 21.00 of this Sunday, December 6, 2020, will be the one declared official for the closing of the ballot boxes. Also around that time, the operators specialized in the field of electoral statistics will offer the first exit polls, which will temporarily configure the future parliament of Romania.
Until then, there are a few more hours, a good opportunity for the people of Suceava to find out what are the thoughts with which the candidates in the front line from Suceava County went to the polls today.
The PNL mayor of Suceava, Ion Lungu, voted at the Section inside the “Samuil Isopescu” Technical College:
,, I voted for the development of Romania, I voted for the development of Suceava county, for the development of Suceava municipality. I voted for a competent team that can do this, for a team that can bring European funds, because the only chance for Romania's development is to attract European funds at national level and, of course, at local level. We voted for a better life for our children and grandchildren! So help us God!"

Fake news in the role of humor

Fake news is all around us. We have to be careful when reading same news. Some fake news can be life-threatening when it comes to food and drink. Especially about the herbs from which teas are made. Also, some news can be used to deceive people for political purposes, deceive people to buy different products, increase viewership and review of articles.

We find it interesting when fake news is used for humor. Our most famous news for that purpose is news.net. They have an electronic newspaper and a television show. They write every day articles on current topics in our country. They change the truth to achieve humor, laughter and fun.

One of their news that was interesting to us was the news about the lack of insulin in our country. It is a drug used in diabetes and it is very important that people use it to keep the disease under control.

      Newspaper headlines were:

      ,

,,MINISTARSTVO ZDRAVLJA UPOZORAVA LJUDE DA SE ČUVAJU DIJABETESA JER VLADA NESTAŠICA INSULINA’’

( THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH WARNS PEOPLE TO BEWARE OF DIABETES BECAUSE THERE IS A SHORTAGE OF INSULIN)

APOTEKE TRAŽE DA SE NESTAŠICA INSULINA REŠI PODIZANJEM DOZVOLJENOG NIVOA ŠEĆERA U KRVI

(Pharmacies are asking for the insulin shortage to be solved by raising the allowed blood sugar level)

Workshop was realized at 3.12.2020. with the students 7. and 8. grades. The students worked in groups. Each groups received several different articles. Some were true and some were false. The groups had the task of recognizing false articles from true articles. After that, we are discussed. Students was delighted. They said:

Milenko: I want to make a facebook page and write a fake news. 😊

Tijana: It is not okey to write fake news, because someone can belive it.

Nikoline: Fake news serves to get votes. That is not right.

Marko: It is easy to recognize fake news. It is enough to check who published it and whether it was published somewhere else.
