Znate li što je clickbait Evo kako ćete to doznati.docx
Do you know what is clickbait.docx
Do you know what is clickbait? Here is how you can find out
The headline is an example of a clickbait headline that make our student Lea Harča angry, however, this article won't be misleading, here you can find out some of the techniques for this sensationalistic approach to journalism
Football player, Luka Modrić is famous among football fans all over the world. His football skills attract fans to the stadium, but he also gets a lot of media attention. A lot of people like to talk about his moves on the field, but also about his personal life off the field.
But in fact, many articles about Modrić don’t bring any important information, but readers click on them because they are tricked by headlines like this: ˝EVERYONE IN REAL IS SHOCK BY MODRIĆ'S LOOK: fitness coach got an assignment he didn't expect”.
This bomb of a headline was published on NET.HR portal (July 15, 2017). Maybe only his biggest fans weren't disappointed when they read that the article is about Modrić losing 2 kilograms. Because that was the most important information behind this headline.

A similar method of deceiving the audience by using exaggeration and expressions like shocking, dramatic, you won't believe,…, is obvious in the next headline: ˝Student left his apartment window open for 5 months, he was shocked when he saw the apartment˝. The article was published on 7 September 2020 on the portal INDEX.HR. It seems to me that nothing is shocking in finding pigeons poop after what he has done and I don't see why this deserved to be article material. Especially not with such a headline that uses the word shocking.
These headlines were used to show what kind of headlines are clickbait. Their goal is to lure the audience to click on them. The more click, the better the price is for advertising space in media. Online media mostly survives from selling their advertising space because reading is in most cases free for the readers. Because of that, the phenomena of clickbait headlines are spreading and there are more and more headlines trying to get our click. Thereby they are counting on curious readers, but also on the readers whose media literacy is not on very high level and they are not aware of the deceiving techniques used by clickbait creators. So here are some other techniques.

Although some headlines don't use exaggerated expressions like the ones mentioned above, they can also be clickbait. For example, this is the one ˝Products is withdrawn from sale because it contains plastic: Don't consume it.˝ The article was published on November 4 2020 on POSLOVNI.HR portal. That article is clickbait because it leaves out the key information.
Some of the similar headlines that are trying to hide key information can be recognized by a phrase here is how. Just like this article under the headline ˝Are you interested in who blocked you on Facebook? Here is how you will find out˝, published January 25 2020 on VRISAK portal.
Some use numbers to hide the information. Here is one example: ˝Severina is celebrating her special day: She posted a new photo, and everyone immediately commented on one thing˝. The article was published on VEČERNJI.HR portal 2 September 2020. That one important thing was her dress, which as her fans noticed, she has worn already a few times.
The important thing is also our time, that is why we suggest you to look at Facebook page HEJT ZA KLIKBEJT for more clickbait examples. If you become skilled in recognizing of those headlines you will spend less of your time in the future on opening of those deceiving headlines. /Lea Harča, 8. b; photo source- the Internet/

ONLINE WORKSHOP ON INFORMATIONAL TITLES AND CLICKBAIT
The students of the 7th grade B from the “Mihai Eminescu” Secondary School in Alexandria within the Erasmus + Project “Young journalists of today - responsible digital citizens of tomorrow”, under the coordination of Voicu-Popescu Corina and Groseanu-Lungu Gina, participated in October 29, 2020 at a workshop on INFORMATIVE TITLES AND CLICKBAIT.
In the activity, students learned what informative titles are, how to write a title correctly, so as to attract more readers, the importance of subtitles and supertitles in an article. They compared articles with news headlines and sensational headlines highlighting the desire of journalists to attract as many readers as possible using sensational headlines.
Articles from the Teleormanul newspaper's website were taken for analysis, following the aspects presented above.
The students made appreciations on the components of the articles and sketched some key observations that were debated.
Following the activity, the students presented feedback:
The student Ionița Liviu mentions: “The activity was very interesting and now I know how to avoid the error given by a bait title. From now on we will know how to choose the right title for the articles we will write in the school newspaper. ”
The student Desculțu Miruna says: "We must not always give credence to the title of an article, because very often the content of the article is not in accordance with the title".
Regarding the coordination of the workshop, the student Drăghici Octavian points out: "We thank teachers Groseanu and Voicu for their involvement and concern that we have a media education, to be able to differentiate between a bait title and a real title!".

NEW IN SCHOOL
Workshop at the Gymnasium School Nr. 6 Suceava / Romania on journalism
Within the project is Twinning "Young journalists of today - responsible digital citizens of tomorrow" students got acquainted with the headlines and clickbait.
Friday, November 20, 2020, at the Gymnasium School Nr. 6 Suceava / Romania, the online workshop “Informative titles and clickbait” took place online.
Thus, 10 students of the 5th grade from the Gymnasium School Nr. 6 Suceava / Romania benefited from a training in the field of journalism and understood what the informative title and the clickbat represent.
Through the presented materials, students understood that the notion of clickbait is a sensational title (a bait) that attracts attention in order for the reader to click on the content. Some examples of baits were presented: "You won't believe this", "You have to see this", "What happened next will shock you". This title does not reflect the content of the text or constitutes worthless informational content that is hidden behind it. The target is on emotions and curiosity and is distributed mainly through social networks.
They also realized that the purpose of the headline is to arouse the reader's interest, but to briefly describe the content of the article. It can be an interesting short maxim, a sentence, a message or a piece of text that speaks clearly, concisely and interestingly about the text. The informative title provides complete and unambiguous information about the content of the text and is written in capital letters, underlined, colored, etc.
During the workshop, the 10 students conducted workshops that followed the following tasks:
- Creating a main informational title, super title and subtitle for a text already published;
- Creating a clickbait, main title and subtitle for a published text;
- Explaining the objective of clickbait titles and the difference between informative and clickbait titles
The students trained in solving the proposed tasks and showed their attraction to the profession of journalist.

Informative and clickbait headlines
A headline gives us information about the content of the article. It is important not to have headlines that are too long, they will not grab the attention of the reader because reading it takes too much time.
Subheading gives us wider information about the content of a text. It can consist of a few sentences.
Heading comprises general information about the text depending on its type. Heading does not have to be too long, it can consist of one sentence.
There are two types of headlines:
Every day via social media these headlines grab our attention with the goal to make us click on them to see their content. These are usually headlines which have nothing to do with their content and the texts behind them are often boring and worthless. Clickbait headlines attempt to produce an emotion in the reader and attract more people to read the article.
The goal of the informative headlines is to produce interest in the reader and to describe in short the content of the article. Informative headlines convey the real information about the text. It can be an interesting sentence from the text, a thought, and it is always in bold or emphasized in some other way (colour, etc.)
- How can we spot the difference between informative and clickbait headlines?
- An example of a clickbait headline:
“You must read this: you will not believe what has happened!“
An example of an informative headline:
“The temple of Saint Sava is one of the biggest temples in Europe.“
Clickbait headlines have fewer words, while informative headlines are longer and explain in a better way what the text is about.

What is clickbait?
Students of the 5C of Grigor Vitez, Sveti Ivan Žabno Elementary School studying clickbait titles on their Homeroom class. They concluded that these are headlines that attract attention and lure readers to click. The content of such articles does not meet the expectations of readers, and considering that it resembles a bait, this phenomenon is called clickbaiting (eng. click + bait). The students successfully discovered the Croatian name for this phenomenon – klikolovka. They recalled some headlines in which they recognized the clickbaiting and stated how they felt reading newspaper articles.
Everything was followed by discussion in smaller groups, the students concluded that newspaper headlines should not mislead readers, but interest them in reading and announcing the topic.
Students in pairs work on creating their clickbait titles

- 25 tips that will change the way you live

Comment on clickbait by students from class 5. D
I think clickbait is exciting, even though I’m often disappointed when I open the articles.
I get so angry when the title says ‘’Not clickbait!’’ and it turs out to be clickbait!
I can’t resist opening these articles. I always want to know what hides behind the titles.
Clickbait plays on your curiosity! The titles are often fake. I think I’ll open fewer of them now that we had to write them ourselves.

Do you bite the clickbait?
In the world of media reporting, there are two types of headlines - informative and clickbait headlines. Informative one is clearly saying what is the article about, for example: " On the playground of elementary school Đuro Ester, a new gym is being built".
In that way, it is possible for the reader to know from the headline what is the most important information in the article. That could also be a disadvantage of the informative headline, especially if it is published on a portal, it may not attract many clicks because the headline discovers the most interesting information without reading everything. The informative headline needs to be interesting and make readers to read the article, something like this: " Pizza place GROF is preparing a big giveaway".
Informative headlines defects can be stylistic errors, wrong or clumsy word order, too much information, and similar. Here are few examples of informative headlines which style should be corrected: *" In the car and truck accident one person died, three are injured" (word car was written as abbreviation and headlines should be written in an official language with full words.). *The article is originally written in Croatian. Some things are not completely translatable.
"Renata found a way how to connect traditional and modern and ladies who are following fashion trends are thrilled" (this headline should be shorter, e.g. Renata connects traditional and modern, fashion followers are thrilled). Headlines like this summarize the most important facts without exaggeration, they are clear and more ˝honest˝ towards the reader. They give verified information, usually substantiated with words from experts and responsible person.
Journalists from elementary school Đuro Ester analyse newspaper articles' headlines and headlines from web portals
If we start looking on the Internet, it is easy to see headlines that pop out and try to catch our attention. Those headlines have the same structure and serve as a bait to collect as many clicks as possible for the article and a web page. The more visits one web page has the bigger the chance is for the page to be financed by the advertisers. Advertisers will rather pay for ads on more visited and popular portals and they will pay a big price for that.
Articles with clickbait headlines very often don't have the information promised in the headline. Articles with clickbait headlines usually don't have any experts' opinions about the topic. Headlines mostly sound something like this: "This erased all of my wrinkles!" or "You won't believe what happened when…", "With this trick you will be asleep in just 3 seconds!..."
Although they are persuading us that they are revealing the shocking truth, amazing fact, sensational discovery, things written in those articles aren't confirmed with any research that proves it. Those headlines are exaggerated in regard to the content of the article that has no informative purpose to the reader. Very often there is somehow a hidden commercial for a product, so the readers can often stay disappointed.
Clickbait headlines are examples of second-grade journalistic practice, if behind them there is no promised information or if the headline is very exaggerated. Recognition and distinction of these two types of headlines contribute to our media awareness in using the media. We can evaluate and make a decision about the credibility of the article so we wouldn't waste our time on reading the articles that are not worthy of our attention.

Informative and clickbait headlines
Students are listen about o informative and click bet titles. They are got a different newspapers for reading. After reading various news, we are discuss about the connection of titles and their contents. As an example of useful content, students to choose newspaper Prosvetni pregled, because, the reader from the title knows what the most important information in the articles.
The title, "Drink these three things and a miracle will happen", was chosen by the students as the best click bet title because there is no verifiable information in the article, they are not scientifically proven and in fact represent an advertisement for products on the market.
Recognizing and distinguishing these two types of headlines contributes to the development of our media literacy. It is important to make the right decision about the credibility of the article based on the title so that we do not waste time reading irrelevant texts.
