Editorial Error – Poodle Advertisement Published as Informational Text

On Friday 12 March 2021 local weekly newspaper Glas Podravine i Prigorja published an article entitled Marijana's Beautiful Poodles Attract Everyone's Attention Wherever They Go on its back page. The author of the article is Matea Konfic. The article can also be found on the news portal of Glas Podravine i Prigorja: https://www.glaspodravine.hr/marijanine-predivne-pudle-uvijek-plijene-paznju-gdje-god-one-boravile/ .

The article about poodles is textually appealing to many readers because the topic is different and more interesting than the topics on everyday life. We can also learn something new by reading this article. However, besides all the positive aspects of this article, I have also noticed a few negative ones, which the readers are probably not aware of because they are not familiar with the rules that journalists and editors have to follow.

The poodle breeder says that she has always wanted poodles even though she grew up surrounded with hunting dogs. Poodles are often described as „aristocratic“ animals compared to other dogs and their price listed in the article contributes to this opinion. The editor has decided to quote the poodles' owner regarding the price, which could lead the readers to consider the market value of their pets. The editor has also provided the owner's address and her profession, which could violate her privacy. The owner said that her dogs are used to living with people and being indoors. They have been used to bathing and cutting their hair from an early age so that they would be prepared to participate in dog shows. This information could, in a way, be perceived as discriminatory to dog owners who cannot afford this kind of treatment to their dogs.

Information that the poodles will soon have puppies and the price of the puppies (from 1500 to 2000 EUR) suggest that this article was publised for promotional purpose not as an informational text. The article also provides information about the awards that these poodles have received as well as the type of obedience training that they have had. All of this is written with the purpose of enticing the readers into buying these poodles. In the final sentence of the article the author emphasises that the royal poodle is the right choice for all those readers who want a large dog which does not shed and which is suitable for people suffering from allergies. The poodle breeder's address in this context suggests that the readers of Glas Podravine and Prigorja do not need to go far to buy royal poodles as they can buy them locally. Although the topic of this article is interesting, the purpose of the article is to bring benefits to the dog breeder in terms of advertising her business.

In my opinion, all editors and journalists should do their jobs following the rules of the profession and journalistic ethics. The article containing an advertisement should be specifically labeled as promotional text.

The editorial mistake of the Dnevno.hr portal compromised the safety of the beaten boy.docx

Urednički propust portala Dnevno.hr naštetio dobrobiti pretučenog dječaka.docx

The editorial mistake of the Dnevno.hr portal compromised the safety of the beaten boy

Clicks are more important than children's well-being - the portal removed only the video, but not the photo that reveals the boy's identity

An article entitled “A video trying to cover up! The case that horrified Osijek: Who beat Matej? ” This is one of the examples of how children should not be portrayed in the media. The article was published on 13 November 2019 on the Dnevno.hr portal. Having been given the task of finding an example of a violation of journalistic ethics, I found the mentioned article on the website of the Croatian Journalists' Association (HND).

The photo and video attached to the article revealing the identity of the boy beaten at the Dinamo-Osijek match on 27 October 2019. The source of the information is a report from a reader. The article and video horrified the principal of the boy's school, so she turned to HND. If the editor had done his job respecting the Code of Honor of Croatian Journalists, he certainly would not have attached the boy's photo and video next to the article. An editor should be familiar with the code of his profession, which states, among other things, that “any procedure that directly or indirectly reveals the child's identity as inadmissible, i.e. that a child must not be interviewed and its photos must not be published without his consent and without the presence and consent of a parent or guardian”. It also states that the welfare of the child is superior to the public interest and that the disclosure of the child's identity is prohibited “regardless of whether the child or minor is a witness, victim, suspect or defendant ”.

The mentioned allegations are part of Article 19 and Article 20 of the Code of Honor of Croatian Journalists. The HND Honor Council wrote that these articles of the Code were undoubtedly violated by the publication of the photo and video. I fully support the opinion of the Council of Honor and the school principal and I think that the goal of publishing the boy's photo and video content was not to "raise awareness about the consequences of violence", as Mark Cigoj, editor of the Dnevno.hr portal, claims. It seems more likely to me that the ultimate goal of this article is to have as many clicks as possible. The sensationalist title and the fact that the reader's report was not checked at all from other sources lead to such a conclusion.

Finally, it should be mentioned that the HND Honor Council issued a warning to the Dnevno.hr portal and suggested that the portal remove the content by which the victim is identified and exposed to the general public. However, as can be seen HERE, the Dnevno.hr portal only partially acted on the suggestion of the HND Council of Honor. The video within the article is no longer available, but the photo of the beaten boy is still within the article. /Petra Kušec/

    WORKSHOP - BE AN EDITOR

    Group 1

Title - Maid stole HRK 20,000

What would we change in the article?

We would not list the Muslim religion of a suspect woman because mentioning religion is offensive to members of a particular religion and labels all of them as thieves.

Such an editorial procedure insults and ridicules members of a particular religion.

    Group 2

    Title - Horror in Dalmatia

What would we change in the article?

We would not list the full name of the victim. Also, we would not write that the victim lives in the same place as rapists because that way the victim’s name could be found out before the trial and she could suffer additional pain.

The publication of this information is not in accordance with the code of the journalistic profession, it does not meet ethical standards.

    Group 3

Title - Iva Majoli underwent cosmetic nose surgery

    What would we change?

We would not mention the name of Dr. Glumičić and his Aesthetic-Surgical Center, because in that way that doctor and his aesthetic center are advertised in the newspapers.

It is not transparent and responsible journalism, such journalism promotes sensationalism.

    Group 4

Title - Blood flows in streams ...

    What would we change?

We would change the title to be in line with the content of the article. The article does not encourage aggression as the title suggests. The article encourages empathy and peers tolerance, so the following title would be more appropriate:

The boys got into a fight and deserved appropriate pedagogical measures

Iva Majoli had a nose surgery

Iva Majoli, a former tennis player and a member of Fed Cup representation,  visited an aesthetic surgery center in Zagreb at the beginning of April. As we found out, Iva had some breathing difficulties which she had tried to solve during her stay in America last year. But she hadn`t succeeded.

As the problem remained unsolved, the former tennis player (whose name will be engraved in the history of sport as the winner of a prestigious Roland Garros),  went to a very successful  cosmetic surgeon (Dr  S.G.) with twenty years of medical experience.

A minor surgery, together with a nose reshaping, went well. Iva is very satisfied with the result, and her friends praise Iva` new look. She went on with her business duties after a few days.

    Be an editor

We could hardly wait to go to school again because we wanted not only friends, but also classes, teachers and workshops. The workshop "Be an editor" was held on April 28. with 8/2 grade students,  with half of the class that attended classes at the school that day. Osmaci talked to teacher Aleksandra Milutinović about what it is like to be an editor, and new suggestions and new ideas on how to improve our journalism section and our school digital magazine appeared at the workshop:

The presentation and workshop were made by the teacher of the partner school on the project, Stojanka Lisički, and we translated it into Serbian:

In the Answergarden tool, students answered the questions what is and who is the editor:

We discussed what the articles we read from the tasks of this workshop were and how true, shocking, interesting they were and what we would change if we were the editors. Considering that this is a group of students in which our most active journalist of the student newspaper, Sanja Ivanović, was, we asked her what she would do if she were the editor of a newspaper. Here is what she answered: "If I were the editor of a magazine or a daily newspaper, I would try not to make my newspaper a yellow press, not to attract readers with clickbait headlines, such as: shocking and incredible, but to ensure the exceptional readership of my magazine by offering its readers content. which is interesting, close to them and interesting. I think people are tired of reading the news about the crown and politics. Especially young people are not interested in these topics, so they should start some content as soon as possible that will divert their thoughts from everyday problems. Young people in Ćićevac have launched a portal for young people: www.neksecujeglas.com and for now it is very readable, I hope it will stay that way. My classmates and I plan to write articles for this portal because we have practiced writing in this project and we think that, after the school newspaper, since it is time to leave this school, it is OK to continue our journalistic journey by creating content that is for our peers in Serbia, something new and different. During the activity, an informative material was presented which aimed at:

Presentation of the basic ethical rules of journalism

Developing a critical thinking ability by editing the editorial text

Recognition of an unethical written text

Presentation of the publisher's obligations in accordance with the Code of Honor

Presentation and analysis of texts on various topics

Articles from the workshop were taken for analysis and changes were made to the level of content, the students suggesting the changes they would have made from the position of editor.

Students made assessments of the components of the articles and sketched some key observations.

Following the activity, the students presented the feedback:

The student Ionita Liviu mentions: << The activity was very interesting and now I know what are the responsibilities of an editor.

The student Draghici Octavian says: << The journalist's Code of Honor must be respected in any situation, and the desire for sensationalism must not remove the journalist from these ethical rules. >>

Regarding the coordination of the workshop, student Groseanu Teodora points out: "We thank professors Groseanu and Voicu for their involvement and concern so that we can know the way to be a full editor" /DESCULTU  MIRUNA /7  B/ photo G.L.G

    WORKSHOP: BE EDITOR

5th grade from the Gymnasium School Nr. 6 Suceava participated in the workshop "Be an editor", a meeting in which students demonstrated their qualities as future journalists.

During the activity were presented various information related to the basic ethical rules of journalism, the obligations of the editor in accordance with the Code of Honor, the importance of critical thinking skills in editing the editorial text, methods of recognizing unethical written text, etc.

Articles on various topics were presented and analyzed and changes were made to the content. Fifth graders suggested changes to the editor's position.

The children were very pleased to participate in the workshop, expressing their opinion on the need to embrace the profession of journalist:

"As a journalist, you can be sure that you will never get bored. There is no risk of getting into the routine, because no day is like the other. One of the most beautiful parts of this profession is that you have the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life. You can start your day talking to a minister about the hottest topics in the country and, paradoxically, end it by talking to the beggar on the street corner, attracted by his gaze or a gesture that makes you stop, price for a few minutes, and turn it into a subject. Journalist status gives you a chance to access environments that ordinary people can't even dream of. ”

    Simioniuc Rareș, V-A

,, It is important to know that you have one of the most important missions: to properly inform people about problems and situations that directly affect or interest them. Because, more than in any other profession, that of a journalist, people are the essence. You have the obligation for them to inform you as correctly as possible, to come in front of them as documented as possible, which is much easier nowadays, when the internet offers so many materials. And yes, in this way you get to benefit from a notoriety that will be part of you. "

    Andreica Maria, V.

The "Be an Editor" workshop had a great impact on students.
