Our Students Visit Melilla

Holly, Mali and Ameya visited Melilla with Miss Thomas and Mrs Cole from the 11th-16th November 2019. After an eventful time at the airport (cancelled flights due to high winds and an overnight stay in Malaga), we finally made it to Melilla in time to attend school on the Monday morning.

School Background

Dyffryn Taf is an 11-18 Co-educational Comprehensive School situated roughly midway between Haverfordwest and Carmarthen, and maintained by Carmarthenshire County Council. It opened as a Comprehensive School in 1989, with many new buildings, and has been extensively refurbished over the last few years. A new Mathematics Block, Science Laboratory and Sports Hall have recently been built, and overall the school provides excellent facilities for the education of its pupils. The school has an open admissions policy, the only limitation being the nature and extent of the resources made available to us.

Though the first language of the majority of our pupils is English, we have a number whose first language is Welsh; these pupils are offered History, Geography, Religious Education and P.S.E. through the medium of Welsh at Key Stage 3. All subject areas are housed in suites and have been provided with the latest computer equipment, thus enabling pupils to benefit from what modern technology can offer.The school’s aim is to extend all pupils to their full potential, intellectually, academically, spiritually, physically and socially. All school policies have this as their central consideration and motivation.

We pride ourselves on the way in which we endeavour to create a caring atmosphere and ethos, where all pupils are treated with respect. Great care is taken to ensure that pupils take appropriate Options in Years 10 and 12. Year 11 and Sixth Form students are carefully guided in their choice of Further Education or career. In the Autumn Term, the school holds an Open Evening where parents and pupils are invited to view the work of Departments.

Existing contribution to the SDGs

As a school we are already working towards some of the SDGs. We are an Eco School and have been a Fairtrade School for over 10 years.  We hold annual Green Days and Fairtrade Fortnight activities both within the school and the local community.  We work closely with local primary schools to promote these values and extend the messages to the younger generations.  In November 2019 our school canteen began working towards becoming plastic free and we hope to further reduce ours conusmption in the near future through raising awareness amongst students and staff by promoting greener living practices.

Our Sustainable Development Team

As part of this project 13 students in years 10 & 11 have been chosen as ambassadors.  They will work within the school to raise further awareness of the SDGs and the project.  They will also take part in the mobility projects to Melilla, Portugal, La Reunion and Finland to collaborate with their international partners on the themes of the project.
