St Ex to Oulu 2: sustainable development: what we noticed

  • After spending almost a month in Finland, we noticed many differences with Reunion Island in terms of sustainable development.

To start with, in the school canteen, the students serve themselves, they can choose the quantity of food they want to eat, we find this system better than in Reunion Island as it avoids an astronomical amount of waste.

In their school, we also noticed that in each classroom, there is a special box for cans which makes sorting easier.

Then, in each of our families, we noticed the presence of specific bins; one for plastic, one for cardboard, one for food. This again makes sorting easier. For the means of transports, at school for example, there is no school bus but a large number of students come by bike regularly, which is obviously easier than in Reunion Island because here, everything is flat so the bike is a very simple means of transport to use - even when it's -20°!

The Finns also have a very efficient system against plastic bottles pollution, after having consumed their drinks, they can throw them in a kind of distributor which gives them back money for each bottle (0,40 euros for a bottle of 1.5L)!

Finally, here, public places and nature are very clean, we hardly noticed any waste.
