Braga

  • Portuguese students’ presentation

In this presentation we’re going to talk about the city of Braga and also our school. In the centre of Braga you can find fountains and a lot of flowers that are maintained throughout the year, so it’s always a vivid place. When you visit our city you might go to Bom Jesus, it has a really nice view of the city, and when seeing an aerial view of the centre of Braga you’ll encounter the Sé de Braga, which is the oldest church in our city , dating back to the year 721 a.c., these are  some of  the things you can see in Braga.

Our school, Sá de Miranda, is really big, we have a patio where mostly everyone hangs out normally, from an aerial view of the school we can see, where at the front we have the classrooms, on the left side the laboratories and at the back the gym and the school garden. In front of the garden you can also find the art rooms where art students have classes. Oscar, the school pet, is an embalmed crocodile that finds himself displayed in the school’s museum, where you can see everything from embryos to embalmed birds. Our are really basic, we have boards and projectors, but the classrooms have very opened space so you can breathe very well in them. The school has another curios place, the old library, we also call it the Harry Potter chambers because it gives that magical vibe, we can also have some classes there which is really fun. But we also have the new library, which is more welcoming than the old library, there is and upper floor where you can study and find many books. The school of Palmeira is one of the schools that belongs the Sá de Miranda’s grouping of schools.

Our school and the partner school, Palmeira, have welcomed many projects and initiatives for helping the environment, such as:

Green Flag day- It went down on the 18th of October in Guimarães. There were a lot of activities from stands, animations to an all-out fashion show. Adding on to the subject, they also hosted “Azeitonas”, who are a Portuguese musical group.

Field class in Pinheirinho stream- to celebrate climate’s global week (20th to 27th September), some Palmeira’s students took time to go to Pinheirinho stream during the sciences and physics and chemistry classes, on the 27th of September, to monitor the quality of the river’s waters, evaluate the state of vegetation and identify species of fauna and flora.

Vertical gardens- On the 16th of October

a town hall technician came to school with the objective of realizing a session discussing different types of gardens: vertical, horizontal and inclusive.

Deer family- Our school has been raising a family of deer since the beginning of the last school year at our farm. Deer are considered an endangered species so we are helping to preserve these animals. The youngest one was born, at the school farm, on October.

Sá bike- It’s a project that motivates the use of bikes on a daily basis to reduce the level of pollution in Braga. We know that the change is not tremendous but every little step helps. The project was promoted on the 27th of September for the European day of school’s sport.

Recycling bins- In our school we have recycling bins planted throughout corridors at school. They are divided between plastics, metal and indifferent. In the classrooms we have recycling bins only for paper for no longer usable papers.

Sustainable consumerism- On the 15th October, some students from Palmeira attended a lecture about Ambiental Education, provided by an engineer from the ambient area of our city hall. She provided different data about consumption, reinforcing the abusive role of promoting and giving some help about the “Reduction of consumption”. Students were motivated to elaborate messages about the subject.
