May

  • May

    The theme for May is outdoor planting. We plant our plants that we sow indoors. We also plant out the seeds that did not need to be supplied indoors. Prior to this, the preschool buys planting boxes and soil. All departments receive their own cultivation box. The boxes are placed in different places on the yard, on different substrates and plant the plants the children in the department have chosen. During the month of May we follow how it grows with different results in the different boxes. We educators walk around with the children and look at each other's boxes, more or less planned.

    The result of how it grows in the boxes depends a lot on where they stand and a growing box that stands on stone slabs and under the roof withers the plants that have been planted. From a learning perspective, it is good that it did not grow in all boxes. The children will then have the opportunity to see with their own eyes how nature's cycle works. What do plants need to grow? And what is it that does not grow?

    ”• understanding of connection in nature and nature's different cycles and how people, nature and society affect each other,

    • understanding how people's different choices in everyday life can contribute to sustainable development;

    • understanding of natural sciences, knowledge of plants and animals and simple chemicals

    processes and physical phenomena, ”(Lpfö18, p; 14).

    With the guidance of educators, the children came to what was needed to get corn, cucumber and daisies to start growing. They started by watering the plants every day. But it still didn't grow. In early June, a child realized that the box was too close to the wall and under the roof. We move out the box from the ceiling and the window wall. A few days later, cucumber plants begin to emerge.

    Here we apply John Dewey's theory Learning-by-doing where the children are faced with a visible problem, have a theory about the problem, they can reflect on what is wrong and then try to find a solution.

    Most other boxes grow well and some departments must harvest before the summer holidays begin.
