During June, children study insects. Since we are a literature profiled preschool, we want to get as much literature into our work with the children as possible. We use fact books about insects to find out what they eat, how they live and what characteristics they have in the natural cycle. The children show interest in insects and animals during our outings and forest visits.

Some departments visit Slottskogen in Gothenburg. They have a nature playground with many insect hotels. Children travel by bus to Slottskogen by public transport. They will learn how to behave in traffic and that traveling together with many people is a environmentally friendly alternative to car. At the playground, they see that insect hotels can look different and that they contain different kinds of material. Some of the hotels all have a net to protect the insects against birds and insectivorous animals. This is what the children take advantage of when we build our own insect hotel.

A department visits the Natural Science Museum, which is also located in Slottskogen. There is a large exhibition on insects and animals.

"A growing responsibility and interest in sustainable development and to actively participate in society" (lpfö18; s, 12). By visiting other places in our local area, we want the children to see how others work for a sustainable future and see that they can also contribute by building an insect hotel.

The children start their work with insect hotels. The groups that make insect hotels do in different ways. So insect hotels look different and are built according to the children's own drawings. We started by making a sketch on how they wanted the hotel to look like, then we searched materials at the preschool (reuse). After that, they started building. The children can use screwdrivers, saws and a hammer to build, create and construct using various techniques, materials and tools (lpfö18; s, 14). Building and decorating the insect hotels took longer than expected and in August they were done and ready for the insect's winter rest.
