Phylloxera Project
The students of 5th Gymnasium of Chania participated in a short-term project about Phylloxera and made presentations on this topic. The project was realized in 2 parts. First, the students attended a lecture which was given by Mr Nikolaos Papadantonakis, agronomist from the Directorate of Agricultural Economics and Animal Husbandry of the Region of Crete. Mr Papadantonakis talked about the insect of phylloxera in detail and gave useful insights into the subject. He described the ways in which the insect spread and referred to the damage it caused to European vineyards in the 19th and 20th centuries and especially in Greece.
Following the lecture, the students worked in groups and carried out some interesting research on the subject of phylloxera based on certain guidelines.
Objectives of the project:
The students will be able to:
-
identify the vitis vinifera, describe its history and cultivation, diseases and pests,
-
recognize phylloxera, explain how it spreads and destroys a vineyard, where it came from, and discuss how to prevent phylloxera,
-
practice researching skills,
-
establish team and communication skills,
-
practice ICT skills,
-
evaluate their products.
Here are the results of their research.
