The School also offers scientific-humanistic courses like science and technology, socio-economic sciences and humanities.

The facilities are great but the most outstanding ones are the library and the School’s museum, where visitors can get in touch with decades of the School’s history.

Near the canteen/buffet we have machines with biologic products. Our School was the first public school in the country to offer biologic products to the school community.

Besides classes, we have a wide range of other activities, such as, football, basketball, volleyball, athletics, long jump and handball. There are frequently workshops about different subjects, for example, golf or chess and interesting exhibitions in the School’s main corridor, for example the one you can see below, celebrating Saint Patrick's Day, on March 17th.

    The School’s History

The school was created in 1955, at a time when the whole country was watching the spread of a network of technical schools. This school worked in different spaces of Matosinhos city until it was definitely installed in today’s building, inaugurated in 1969.

The social and political changes altered its designation, so in 1995 it became Secondary School João Gonçalves Zarco.

In 2009, its requalification was completed as part of the project run by the Government and the company “Parque Escolar”. This requalification significantly improved the physical and material conditions at school, which led to an increased satisfaction of the whole school community.
