    The Media in Poland

The situation of the Polish media changed almost overnight after 1989 when Poland became an independent country. Until then the system of media had dealt with propaganda rather than information and had been centralized under one ruling party. The public radio, television and the local press had depended on the Central Committee of the Communist Party. With the coming of freedom, media ceased to fulfil their previous role and began to serve the whole society. However, by the time this could happen, people had had to be prepared for the new reality that was to come.

History of radio in Poland predates the establishment of Second Polish Republic. A number of radio stations were created in the 1920s. Interrupted by World War II, they resumed operations after the war, but were nationalized by the communist government of the People's Republic of Poland. Independent, privately owned radio stations proliferated in the democratic Third Polish Republic after 1989.

All Polish regions have their own newspapers, mostly limited to the voivodeship where they are issued. In addition, all major national newspapers issue a daily attachment related to local topics.
